Once Scarlett became somewhat calm, Asher brought her some of her clothes to change into. As she pulled her red hoodie over her head, Scarlett noticed for the first time today, that this room looked nothing like herprevious hospital room. Instead, it looked as if it were a guest room of some sort, with floral wallpaper spanned across the walls, a four-poster bed she had been laying on only moments before. In fact, the only thing that looked remotely medical was the heart monitor and IV drip that was placed beside the bed.
She turned to Asher as she fanned her hair out of her hoodie. "Where are we?"
Asher's posture went stiff and his eyes drifted to the floor. "My dad's."
"What?" Scarlett nearly yelled. "Why?"
As if he would take her to the last place either of them wanted to be. His father, despite telling the truth about his wolfy bloodline, was an absolute psychopath. Scarlett didn't want to be anywhere near him and up until now, she thought Asher shared the same sentiment.
"I had to," Asher answered. "Your bite symptoms are coming along a lot faster than most. You were in a car crash only two hours ago and you're already up and walking despite nearly losing a lot of blood and breaking two ribs. Human doctors would have noticed."
Scarlett flinched at his words, unable to believe she had any sort of lasting injury. "Asher, my ribs are fine."
He let out a tired sigh. "That's the point. You're healing at an abnormal rate, which is perfectly normal for werewolves, but not humans. I couldn't risk us being discovered so I took you here to see the pack doctor."
"What? So, your dad just let you waltz in here and use his own personal doctor?" Scarlett said with a hint of sarcasm. "I highly doubt he would care enough to let you."
Asher winced. "Which brings me to my next point..."
She stilled at his words, shooting him a deadly glare. "If there are anymore surprises Asher, so help me God I will—"
"I DIDN'T HAVE A CHOICE!" he snapped, shouting loudly. She jumped back in surprise. This was the first time she had ever heard yell like that, let alone yell like that at her. When he realized his volume, he took a deep breath in and then out. "As soon as you left, Hunter, Carter, and I went after you to keep an eye on you. We found you when you crashed and originally, we thought you would heal on your own so we took you back to your house but..." he trailed off for a moment, his eyes meeting hers. The dim lighting in the room caused his features to seem sharper, his scar looking darker than usual. "Scar, your house was on fire when we got back. It's gone. So, we came here."
Scarlett's legs felt like Jell-O, she sat on the bed, staring at the floor. "My home is gone. My best friend is gone. Even I am, in a way, gone. What am I going to do?"
Asher walked over to her, about to pat her shoulder but thought better of it, so he pulled away. "My father said we can stay here. He's also promised to keep you protected. For whatever reason, someone is after you and they have no problem doing whatever it takes to get to you. At least here you will be safe."
"Safe?" She spat out, looking at him. "Asher, your father pinned me up against a wall and choked me. How am I any safer here than out there?"
"I know this isn't ideal but I promise you he won't hurt you, or else the deal is off," he said, so urgently, it was evident he was desperate for her to believe him.
"What deal?" Scarlett asked.
Asher struggled with his words, but finally he answered, "I told him that I would help him with his work. I know I said he was a bad guy, but really, I was just covering up the whole werewolf thing. Honestly Scar, it's nothing to worry about."
