22/10/1964,
Holy Cross School, GoaThe bell rang and the dining room leisurely filled with mindless jabbers of the students. Menus were discussed and exam schedules were whined about. Amidst all the chaos, Meera's eyes kept probing for her dearest friend.
After running a frantic search through the school, Meera rushed in towards her dorm. She stole a quick glance at the wall clock realising it was only fifteen minutes before the lunch hour ended. Opening the door to her dorm room, she spotted a shivering Urvi squatting at a corner.
"Hey, what's wrong? Are you alright?"
Meera took careful steps towards Urvi.
Without lifting up her head which rested against her knees, Urvi kept sobbing in a low voice.
"I'm there with you. You can tell me about anything that's bothering you."
"Just go. I don't want to talk."
"That's okay. Would you be able to talk about it at a later time?"
"Yes maybe."
"Stay here until you feel well. I'm going to go back to the lectures. Bye."
Urvi made a feeble attempt to wave back a goodbye."Oh my good lord, Urvi! What's wrong with your hand?"
Urvi promptly slipped her hand close to her stomach.
"Look, you're safe here. Who did this to you? Come on, tell me!"
"Am I really safe here?"
"You're absolutely safe here. Please don't cry. I'm here."
"They, they forced a fork into my hand and then left."
Acknowledging the hurt in Urvi's voice, Meera hugged her tightly and the former willingly accepted.
"Who did this to you?"
"T-the s-seniors."
"It's okay. We'll complain about them to the authorities. Don't worry."
"Hmm... Thank you Meera. Thank you for everything."
"You don't have to thank me. I take it as my responsibility."
Urvi smiled and Meera felt it on her cheek. After a minute or two, Meera abruptly broke the hug and stood gesturing Urvi to follow her lead.
"Meera? Where to?"
"You'll know. Soon."
"Huh? I don't understand."
"You trust me right? Then come with me. I have a solution to your problem. A rather permanent one."
"I'm sorry but I really don't seem to wrap my head around what you're saying."
"Not that I expect you to."The sounds of their clomping echoed through the long verandahs that Urvi seemed naive to. As the lights got dimmer and the silence got sinister, Meera scurried and Urvi struggled to keep up with her.
Despite several attempts, Urvi couldn't get Meera talking about the place they were heading to.Panting with exhaustion and fright, Urvi at once stopped sharply and declared, "If I don't get to know where we're going, I am no longer accompanying you."
Twitching as the words entered her ears, Meera turned only to look daggers at Urvi. The menace that her eyes threw made Urvi wanting to run away for safety."My dear, if you don't come with me, I must use any possible method to take you to the cocoon. Shouldn't you want to believe me now?" Meera smirked in victory.
"Cocoon? What cocoon? Just where on earth are we going?" Urvi bawled.
"That door. Right in the front. That's the cocoon. Your cocoon."
"Let's get back. I'm not going in there", Urvi said judging from the old and ominous appearance of the huge wooden door that Meera was gesturing towards.
"I believe that I did not give you an option."
"B-but Meera-"The large hallways engulfed by a petrifying murk now carried Meera's vile laughter.
"Please let's just go back. Please?" Urvi whimpered as she threw her knees to the ground.
"Alright, enough of the detain. Time for work."
