A large hand encased your own, pulling you away from the demon.
Your savior swung you behind him and into safety.
It wasn't until the man had let you go that you finally realized who had rescued you in the first place.
"Mu...zan...?" you mumbled out.
You don't know how or why Muzan was here. Wasn't he on his business trip?
From his quiet gasps for air, though, you could tell that he had ran here to save you.
Your husband stood between you and the female demon, glaring at the attacker while shielding you with his body.
As confident as your husband appeared to be, though, you knew better.
"Muzan-sama," you shouted, tugging at the man's wrists.
He didn't budge, and your pulls became more desperate. "We have to run. The woman in front of you...she's a demon! She'll eat us!"
Rather than fleeing from the scene, Muzan merely stood there as if he had seemed to know that all along. He nonchalantly shot you a glance over his shoulder.
"Stay back," Muzan suddenly growled, causing you to stare right at his perfectly sculpted face.
You opened your mouth to protest, but you immediately pursed your lips when you sensed something from Muzan that you have never detected before.
From his plump lips to his jawline, from his piercing eyes to his calloused hands...your husband only seemed to drip with danger.
Powerful. Violent. Commanding.
His undeniable presence made your blood run cold.
Your husband took calculated steps towards the monster, who had frozen in place and now cowered in fear.
He easily grabbed the demon and flung her flailing body towards the dark earth. Muzan pinned the monster's neck to the ground with just one hand, and he tilted his head to examine the monster in his grasp.
The female demon, now desperate for air, clawed at Muzan's hand in vain.
As she tried to break away, Muzan only tightened his squeeze around her neck, not giving her the chance to breathe.
"M-Mast..."
Muzan narrowed his glowing eyes in annoyance. "What don't you understand? She's mine."
The woman's gargled words came in pieces. "I-It's almost been a month a-and..."
From your distance, your brows came together.
A month since what? And why did this female demon resent you so much?
From the conversation, the woman and Muzan seemed to be some form of acquaintances, too.
"And?" Muzan asked rhetorically since he could care less for her answer. His words seethed through his teeth as he balled his free hand. "I don't want to see you again, you got that?"
Gargling in response, she was able to make out two shallow nods.
Finally satisfied, Muzan released his hold, which left the woman choking and gasping for air.
"Leave," Muzan ordered.
In response, the female demon nervously kept her lowered gaze and took her leave, scurrying back into the darkness like a scared little mouse.
With your feet planted to the ground, you watched your husband slowly stand up and turned to you.
You had always imagined Muzan to be strong, but to see him send a demon running away in fear made you suddenly realize what his hands were capable of.
"Why are you staring at me?" Muzan asked in a low tone, shaking you out of your thoughts.
Muzan slowly inspected your body before his eyes settled on yours once again. His threatening aura never lifted as he watched you.
As you looked at him, you could sense the dark secrets he harbored, begging to be heard.
The man continued to stare at you, and you had to stop yourself from wilting under his intense gaze. He slowly approached you as he carefully selected his words.
"Answer me," he finally commanded. "Are you scared of me?"
Given his stern expression, you know that this was a question not to mess around.
So you replied honestly.
"No, I'm not afraid of you."
At your response, Muzan stopped in his tracks. Your husband creased his brows, and he looked...surprised?
Were people usually afraid of him?
Taking a deep breath, you moved to stand in front of the towering man and wrestled with your pride.
You developed the strength to say, "More importantly, I'm sorry."
Muzan fluttered his eyes.
"Not just for putting you in danger earlier, but also for...everything, I suppose. I haven't done anything right," your voice faltered as you actively stopped yourself from breaking down. "Not for me, not for you, not for my mother."
Not for Giyuu.
Muzan blinked again, and you hated how you couldn't tell what he was thinking.
Forcing a laugh, you grabbed at your satchel.
"I'm frustrated with myself so I wanted to run away. Awkward that I bumped into you, huh?"
Still no reply.
Owls hooted in the distance, the only sound that enveloped you and your husband.
You slowly closed your eyes and accepted the truth.
Muzan wouldn't forgive you. Why would he?
You had been terrible to him since the moment you had met him on your wedding day. Since then, you've only been cynical and angry and selfish.
You let out an impatient huff. "It'd still be nice if you said something..."
A hand gently patted your shoulder. "I forgive you."
Your eyes immediately flew up to meet Muzan's. The last person in the world you had expected to forgive you was the husband you despised for so long.
Yet, Muzan's crimson orbs were filled with sincerity.
The malicious air that had previously surrounded him was now replaced with sympathy.
"I was on my ride back from my business trip when I heard your screams. The night is dangerous, so don't run away, okay?" he advised.
You found yourself shyly nodding to his question.
Your husband slipped your satchel down your arm and slung the bag over himself. "I won't tell your mother about this, but...
...let's go home."
