Giyuu pounced into the night sky with you in his arms.
As Giyuu jumped from tree to tree and, soon, from roof to roof, you carefully studied the Water Pillar from the corner of your eye.
His haori, which flowed behind him like a cape. His hair, which brushed against his jawline with the wind. His eyes, which barely blinked and only shifted when he occasionally glanced in your direction.
You had been so occupied with watching Giyuu that you didn't even notice him slow down and settle you down on a rooftop.
"Wow, it's so pretty here!" you breathed when you instantly spotted the Tokyo city lights in front of you.
From the neon rainbow lights to the golden glows, each vivid hue flickered and twinkled like stars at the horizon.
Electricity was still a fascination in the 1910s and women in Japan never left the house alone during the Taisho Era.
So you sighed as you absorbed the beautiful nightscape, a rare sight for you.
Giyuu took a seat near the rooftop edge and watched you stand in awe. "I'm glad you like the view."
"You had wanted to show me this?" you asked, to which the Water Pillar nodded in response.
"Well," you called as you finally turned to the boy. You rushed to his side and sat down, shaking your fists in excitement.
"Giyuu, you've been hiding this secret spot from me all this time? I—"
"The demons have been more active recently," Giyuu interrupted in a warning tone. "They're hungrier and more desperate for...you know."
"Ah, that." Referring to your family secret, you stifled a giggle. "Don't worry. The demons will never find that flower, and they'll never suspect that I will know anything about it."
Giyuu just noted that demons have been more active in their hunts for invincibility, but your assertiveness placed the boy at more ease.
Just a little bit, though.
"I'm also leaving for a mission soon," the boy added. "Demons have been killing more humans and even each other."
You've heard about demons eating people, of course.
But demons killing each other?
That was new.
You wondered why the monsters were now turning against their own kind.
"Oyakata-sama wanted me to look into this," Giyuu finally added. "I'm heading out at daybreak."
Even though you knew Giyuu would eventually have to leave, Giyuu's sudden gloomy gaze immediately extinguished your lighthearted mood.
"Giyuu, what's wrong?" you quietly asked.
Although you've noticed his sadder expression earlier, you could no longer ignore how the boy looked more downcast than usual.
You reached over to grab his forearm, giving the demon slayer a comforting squeeze while your eyes searched his blue ones for answers.
"Remember last time I came over?" he started.
The last time Giyuu came over?
He held his gaze with yours until he suddenly looked away. "Ah, never mind."
"Hm?" you wondered, puckering your lips into a pout.
Oh, yes. You remember.
You recalled the moments before your screeching mother decided to barge in.
