"Fine, fine, I'll tell you me and 'samu's backstory, let's just head back home for now."
================================================================================
-At Home-
"Oi, stupid tsumu, we weren't supposed to tell her! Idiot piss-hair!"
"Well she needs to know someday! Idiotic, ugly onigiri fanatic!"
The twins were arguing again. Yet this time, you could sense something different. Usually, they'd argue over something stupid and pointless, but this time, it's not. It's about their backstory. All of their past experience summed up in one backstory- However, you were confused. Why did they have to be so secretive about it? What have they got to hide?
"Atsumu, Osamu, what are you hiding from me? What have you got to hide?"'
The twins were shocked by your stern expression and voice. Never have you used such an attitude towards them- You saw them as friends, mentors, people you look up to. Yet at this momment, you were so stern, so commanding. At that momment, you practically shared the same aura with Tobio himself. Your Prussian blue eyes stared into the twins' souls, seeking for an answer.
Suddenly, Atsumu's anxious expression melted into one of sympathy:
"Our backstory and childhood wasn't the best one. We didn't want to tell you because we didn't want you to take advantage of us after telling you our past- Our weaknesses. But unlike that onigiri fanatic, I trust you."
Osamu's face scrunched up immediately, as he retorted, "Hey! I trust Y/N too!"
Trust. It was something you shared with your mother. You and your mother cared for each other, and that's why you natrually trusted each other. Trust- Did they see you as family? Did they really care for you this deeply? Should you do the same as well? Seeing the twins placing their trust in you, willing to tell you their weaknesses... It was touching. It truly was.
"Fine, fine. I'm listening."
Both twins let out a sigh. They now wore a sorrowful expression on their face, with their eyes lacking shine, just like a sad, dead fish. That expression seemed so familiar- Because it was the one you wore when you thought of your mother. You predicted that their backstory must be a miserable one: No wonder they were so hesitant about telling you.
"So, here's the story...
Twins' flashback
"Get out of my sight, pathetic foxes."
More then 50000 years ago, there was a couple- Mr. and Mrs. Miya. For several years, they were unable to have children. As a result, they took in the fox twins as 'temporary children', and named them 'Osamu' and 'Atsumu'. At that time, The twins were merely foxes- Not kitsunes. Yet, under the great care of their parents, they eventually learnt to do tricks, and to speak in human languages. Life back then was amazing for them. Osamu developed his love for onigiri all because of Mrs. Miya's onigiri- As for Atsumu.. He's always been whiny and annoying.
2 years later, the couple's attitude towards the twins changed drastically. They ignored them. Starved them. Mr. Miya even beat them up when they bit Mrs. Miya's ankles for attention. They were confused. Extremely confused.
"Oi 'samu, wassup with em?"
"Shut yer ass idiot 'tsumu! Of course we go spy on em!"
After that surprisingly short argument between the twins- They swiftly came to a conclusion: To spy on their parents. Osamu came up with different possibilities: Either the couple's jobs are stressful and that they didn't have the energy to take care of them- Or they've finally gotten a child and decided to get rid of the twin foxes.
The twins pressed their large ears against the gap between the wooden doors, as they eavesdropped on the couple's conversation.
"Awh, look at your baby bump!"
"I know honey, let's get rid of those stinky pests. They're just animals."
This conversation was enough for them to understand- The couple didn't want the fox twins anymore. They wanted to get rid of them.
They were sad. Devastated. Hopeless. Are they really gonna starve to death when they get thrown out? The area around the house was quiet. Unnaturally quiet. No birds or mice has ever stepped foot on that area. They won't have food. They can't survive-
"Ah, how convenient, the pests are right here!"
The 40-year-old Mr. Miya said with a raspy voice and a mischievous expression worn on his face.
"Sure honey, throw them out!"
The 38-year old Mrs. Miya replied. Her once motherly aura faded into one of selfishness and greed. A twisted, sinister expression grew on her face. Her purple eyes glared at the twins in annoyance, as if the twins were nothing but a nuisance. The motherly expression she once wore... It faded into nothing but dust.
Soon, the fox twins were drenched in rain, out in the wilderness. Did they deserve this? Was this a punishment of some sort? Were the gods mad at them? What did they do wrong?
Click, Click
Footsteps.
The twins heard footsteps heading towards them. They knew it wasn't the couple. The couple never wore wooden slippers. Then who was it? They shrinked under a tree and shivered in fear. Never had they thought hunters would appear nearby- It was only the couple living here for such a long time.
The mysterious shadow heading towards them eventually faded into a tall, white-haired kitsune with black tips at the end of his hair strands, and Yellow fox eyes.
"I'm Kita Shinsuke, leader of the Inarizaki Clan of Kitsunes-"
The twins were huddled up in a corner, trembling, crying, and covering their ears. Kita noticed, of course: He knew they weren't listening. They didn't listen because they were scared. They didn't listen because they thought they'd die. They didn't listen because they didn't see the reason to.
Thus, Kita gently held the twins in his arms, and took them to the Inarizaki Shrine, where the clan resides. The twins were shocked: Doesn't the world hate them? Why is Kita doing this?
The kitsunes in the shrine were kind to the twins. They took care of them- The twins didn't get onigiri everyday like they used to, but Osamu eventually learnt how to make them; Technically, I guess you can say that they still keep the habit of.. eating Onigiri.
Once, the twins were infected with a rare disease- one that cannot be cured. The Inarizaki Clan had quite advanced knowledge on medicine, provided that their ancestors had left them a library of medicine books. Yet, there were only two choices: Either they let the twins die, or they turn the twins into immortal kitsunes.
"So, Atsumu, Osamu, do you want to turn into kitsunes in order to survive? Just like us?"
"Mmmph... I *cough* still wanna live.. "
"I want *cough* more onigiri too.."
The decision was made. Despite being young fox cubs, they knew the price that came with it: Living a life that lasts forever. Even if they make friends along the way, they'd still die as long as they aren't immortal like them. They'd still lose countless comrades, allies, friends- or even lovers along the way, with them- existing. Existing on this cruel world, smiling through the stinging pain of loss and death. Were they prepared? Probably. Actually, no, it's not even probable. They weren't prepared. But they wanted to live. They'd rather stink in this pathetic world than to die that early.
At least, they were prepared to lose Tobio, and a bunch of your ancestors. But not you. Within you, they felt a sense of longing and desire....
