"Dad, what are werewolves?" 4-year-old Remus asked.

His father, who was sitting at the table, put down his paper. "Well, they are creatures that turn into beasts every full moon."

Remus grinned. "Cool! I wanna be a werewolf!"

"No, Remus. Werewolves are nasty creatures. They are monsters." His dad explained, shaking his head.

"Oh..."

His mother appeared, smiling. "Are you excited about your birthday?"

"Dad? Dad?" Remus called, tugging on his father's robes.

"What Remus?"

"Dad, I think there's a monster under my bed. Come look." Remus said, attempting to drag his father to his room.

"I told you, Remus, there is no monster under your bed." His father insisted, walking him to his room and tucking him in. "You're safe. Go to bed."

"Can you check again?"

"I checked yesterday. You're fine. Goodnight." He turned.

"Please?"

"Remus," Dad said tiredly, rubbing his forehead. "I don't have time for this. Go to sleep. Goodnight."

And with that, his father left, failing to notice the shattered window a few feet from Remus's bed.

"Goodnight dad," Remus said quietly, relenting.

He put the covers over himself and clutched the blankets. Minutes passed, he heard something under his bed. The creaking sounds echoed in his mind.

"It's okay," He thought to himself. "Dad said it's okay."

After a few minutes, Remus rolled over to his side. He got a terrible feeling, a sickening one. He was scared. There was another noise, a growl of sorts.

Remus got up to run to his parent's room. But the moment he lifted the covers, he was met face-to-face with a creature. A wolf. It bore its teeth, staring hungrily at him. Remus screamed.

"Lyall? Come quick- I think something's wrong."

"Confringo!"

"Sir- please calm down. I understand."

"No, you don't! He was bitten by a bloody werewolf!" Lyall shouted furiously, holding his unconscious bleeding son in his arms.

"I heard you, sir," The desk manager said firmly. "I have a healer coming, but I need some information first. Please tell me your son's name."

"Remus Lupin."

The desk manager did a double-take. "Remus Lupin?"

"Mum?"

"Yes, Remus." His mother answered, sitting on the hospital bed attempting at a smile. She closely watched the scratches permanently scarring his face.

Remus shifted. "The healer said I was a- a Lycan-Lycan-"

"Lycanthrope?"

"Yeah. The healer said to dad that means I'm a werewolf. Dad said that werewolves were monsters."

"Remus..." His mother started, face falling.

"Does that mean I'm a monster?"

"No, Remus." She breathed, hugging him. "No, of course not."

"But dad said-"

"Remus," His mother said, voice firm but still shaky. She looked at him. "Remus listen to me. You are not a monster. Don't- Don't let yourself believe otherwise. You understand me?"

"Ok, Mum." He agreed, not really understanding what she was saying.

"You will stay here during your transformations." His father said.

Remus hated it, it was a dusty old room with no windows. But he heard something in his dad's voice that didn't make him want to protest.

"Ok." There was a long silence. "Dad, I'm scared."

His father kneeled down.

"I know."
