Remus was fuming.
"You think I like going out there and spying for you? That I like conferring with the very person that made me like me?"
"Of course not, Moony, but-" James started.
"For your safety- For everyone's safety. And yet you still suspect that I would betray you? I- How-?"
"Voldemort could easily get information from you," Sirius said. "We're not saying you're betraying us, Moony, we're saying you're-" He stopped as if trying to find the right words to say.
"You're easily accessible." Lily, who hadn't spoken in a while, finished.
Remus didn't listen to them, he couldn't bear to deal with the thought that his friends didn't trust him. "Dumbledore's sending me off for a month, I'll be back."
-༓-
"Hey- we're sorry."
"I know."
James sat down next to him, saying after a moment: "We're going into hiding."
"What?"
"Voldemort's after Harry. There's a new spell Dumbledore's willing to try out called the Fidelius charm. It would hide our location. There's a secret-keeper that can tell the secret."
Remus looked at him. "Are you saying I-"
James's face tinged pink. "Uh- no. We already decided. It's going to be Sirius."
James looked at him carefully, as if expecting him to be mad, but Remus just nodded. "I get it. You made the right decision, Sirius would never reveal the secret."
There was a pause, "I have to go. Back, I mean."
"When?"
"Tomorrow."
"Stay awhile. We're doing the spell tomorrow. P-Sirius can tell everyone the secret before you leave."
-༓-
"No..." Remus breathed, reading the letter hastily penned by Dumbledore. James and Lily were dead.
Dead.
They were gone. So was Peter. The idiot tried to go after Sirius when he realized what had happened. He had never had much bravery- never fought as many battles as them.
And Sirius... Remus would have never expected. He was being sent to Azkaban. Remus almost wanted to go back and help his friend out of yet another stupid situation- but he couldn't. Remus grasped at straws nonetheless.
"Maybe they tortured him." He thought, trying to find an explanation where one of his closest friends wasn't a spy for Voldemort. But he couldn't. He knew. Knew that secret-keepers had to willingly give up the secret, it couldn't be tortured out of them.
Remus broke down. James, Lily, and Peter, all ran through his mind.
"You're not alone."
He was left alone to deal with the deaths and betrayals of his best friends. He was left alone to deal with his own monsters.
