Kallos’ alarm beeped, causing her to jump out of bed. Her heart beat so fast she thought it was going to leap out of her chest. She took several deep breaths and closed her eyes. As soon as her heart slowed down, she walked to the bathroom to get ready.
While in the shower, she started to think about who her soul mate was. Could it be Ian, the sweetheart? Sometimes, she felt like he could see through her, as if he saw all of her secrets. Or could the bad boy, Sean, be her one and only? The one who made her blood boil.
Kallos groaned as she remembered the goddess’s words. She knew what she had to do today. The thought alone scared her. Deep inside, she wasn’t sure if she could go through with what she needed to do.
A sudden sharp pain rippled through her stomach. Kallos dropped to her knees, screaming out in agony. The stabbing pain in her abdomen made her feel as if something was being forcefully pulled through her. Through the cloud that seemed to surround her, she heard the bathroom door slam against the wall.
“Kallos!” she heard her mom scream. “James!”
Kallos’ heart raced. She didn’t want to have her dad to see her naked, but it looked like she didn’t have much choice. The vibrations of her father running through the house shook the foundations.
“Help her!” her mother cried. “I think it’s time!”
Tears were streaming down her mother’s face. The pain wasn’t getting any better. It seemed to be getting worst.
“Sweetie, do you need my help?” her dad asked.
“Yeah, can you hand me a towel?”
Kallos heard the cabinet opening, and felt someone reach in to turn off the water. She glanced up and saw a towel hovering above her head. Pulling herself up along the railing, she grabbed the towel and quickly wrapped it around herself. The pain was still there, but it was now dull and bearable. Her dad’s hand was there to steady her, so she took it. He pressed his other hand to her back for support.
“Thank you.”
She looked up to meet his eyes. He nodded and smiled at her. Her mother’s ashen face slid into her line of vision. Kallos’ heart broke as her mother looked away.
“Mom, I’m fine,” she said, moments later.
Her dad led them back into her room, her mother following close behind them. “Are you sure, honey?”
She nodded. “Yes.”
“Pancakes are ready downstairs,” her mother said, and walked past them to hurry down the stairs.
Kallos felt the tears forming in her eyes. She blinked rapidly to keep them from falling. She stared at her father as he walked past her bed.
“Does Mom hate me?”
A sad smile spread across his lips. He shook his head at her and said, “No, sweetie. You’ve just scared her, that’s all. She can never hate you. You know, you don’t have to go to school today.”
Kallos sighed and wrapped her around her chest. “No, I need to go. I’ll be down in a bit.”
Her father clasped her hands in his and patted them gently. He approached the door, but didn’t turn around. “I love you, Kallos,” he said before he shut the door behind him.
As soon as she heard the door close, Kallos burst into tears. Just yesterday, they were all happy, and now they could barely look at her. Nothing would ever be the same, she knew. Not now. Not ever.
Kallos wiped her tears away, and moved toward her dresser. She rummaged through several drawers, and found her favorite long-sleeved light pink shirt and tight black pants. She marched into the closet, and grabbed her short black boots. If she would be kissing two tall boys today, she was going to need some height in order to reach them properly.
