I open my eyes to reveal the sunny sky staring at me through the car window. As I get up I feel a couple bumps. Where the heck were we now? I thought quietly. "We're here, Yemi." My mother chimed happily. I groaned and looked out the window that was now revealing a rocky trail. I'll have to walk up this after school?  It's fine....  I shouldn't worry about future stuff or the past. But I can't. I can't stop it. No matter what, I always think about the past and future...

I pull myself out of my thoughts and open the car door, staring vacantly at the medium sized two story house. I sighed and grabbed all my belongings that were on the back seat with me. My mother rushed to the door and a realtor came out, holding a key. Yet, they looked very...rushed? "Here is your key ma'am." The guy said hurriedly. My mother took it without question and motioned me to the door.  Then, she swung around making me jump. "Oh! Is everything from the family who lived here before gone?" She shouted.  The man nodded, and hurried off into his car. "What's his deal?" I asked, practically huffing.

She shrugged and picked up the boxes she had set down.  She put the key in the lock and turned the door,  the key making a happy jingle when she opened the door. She peeked around the frame of the door, turning the lights to the house on. I tilted my head in confusion. "Uhm, isn't it daytime still?" She turned her head to face me. "I'm just making sure the lights work, calm down Yemi." I scoffed at her remark and didn't reply, her going into the house first.

To be fair, the house was quite big. The living room was across from the kitchen, the furniture looked chic and rustic. No wonder why mother liked this so much! Taking my shoes off and dropping my bags beside the door, I went back outside to help her get our belongings in. Picking up 4 bags I grunted and lifted them onto the porch, mother laughing. I had a thing for making people laugh. People deserve a good laugh, especially when they're going through tough times.

As mother opened the door for me, I sighed heavily and dropped the bags slowly and haphazardly, trying not to break anything in them. "Thank you, Yemi honey." Mother said smiling. I smiled back, noticing her shoes were on in the house.  "Why are you still wearing your shoes in here?! It's a sin on our tradition!!!" I blurted out. Mother laughing, patted my arm and spoke breathlessly. "Were not in Japan anymore, Yemi!" I frowned. "Oh...Right." I forgot we had moved already.

"Hey honey, it's okay...I miss Japan too. But, we get to start fresh!" She said, rubbing my shoulders. It wasn't that I was missing. I was missing father..... I sighed and felt my vision being dominated by blurriness. I blinked them back, pretending hair was in my face. Thank goodness mother didn't realize.  She had turned her back and taken her shoes off, heading into the kitchen. "Go ahead to your room and check it out! It's on the right." She said, humming.

"Okay, mother...By the way, what are you making for dinner?" I asked, heading up the flight of stairs. "Rice curry, Your favorite." I smiled warmly and cheered quietly. "Okay. Tell me when it's ready!" I yelled, racing up the stairwell.
