An old American author once wrote about a green light. His character would reach out for it. Nearly grazing it with his fingertips, but never touching it. It always stayed just out of his reach, never moving and never staying.
Miss Eastman thought about this light quite often. She had reach out for the light again and again and no matter how hard she tried to grasp it, it always slipped through her fingers. Every aspect of her life seemed to crumble around her when she got close to grasping that light. She sees no point in reaching for it at all. If she's learnt anything from being out in the vast vacuum of space for three years, is that light dies.
Everything dies.
Miss Eastman's transfer from the U.S.S. Sirius to the U.S.S. Enterprise happened exactly three months after her sister died. It was a long three months that she could barely stand, but she pushed through. Her sister would not want her to give up at all, which is what she really wanted, so she continued on for her.
Many thoughts and comments about her assignment to the Enterprise crossed her jumbled thoughts. Many of them were about her remembering the way to the space dock. Some were about her regretting the decision not to resign from Starfleet all together. A few tried to keep her count of prime numbers going. Only one was about her sister.
She rushed through the corridors of the station, oblivious to where she was going. Her blind travels to the space dock were obscured by a path she knew well- it was just the wrong one for the space dock.
"Doctor Eastman?" A young man spoke, bringing her out of her suffocating thoughts.
"Yes, sir."
The man approached her, walking quickly to her. He was a few inches shorter than her. His blonde hair seemed to be capped on his head, and stopped just at his light eyebrows. He wore a yellow shirt, the sleeves were a bit too short, but otherwise it fit perfectly. He was clearly fresh out of the academy.
"Aren't you suppose to be aboard the Enterprise?"
Miss Eastman raised her eyebrows slightly, but her stone expression remained unchanged.
The man laughed.
"Come with me." He said. "I have been assigned to that ship as well."
He turned and started off down the corridor. Miss Eastman followed. She identified his accent as from San Francisco; the same place where the Academy and Starfleet headquarters is located. He was a new recruit most likely following in a family member's footsteps.
And he had no idea what he was getting into.
She must have been so deep in her own thoughts that she had completely passed the transporter room she was to go to. Thankfully the ensign had passed and showed her the way.
"Great." An older man behind the panel said. He sounded indifferent and unbothered by their presence. His hooded eyes were almost completely covered by his bushy eyebrows that furrowed as he pressed the buttons at his fingertips.
"Space dock to Enterprise," he spoke out.
There was a slight pause before a woman's voice came through the intercom:
"Enterprise, Lieutenant Uhura here,"
"Your new recruits are on standby."
Another pause.
The man gave an impatient huff of breath that made Miss Eastman clench her jaws.
You have nothing better to do. Just be patient... She scolded him.
