Summary: Based on the anthrax case (S4E24) when Spencer gets exposed and has to be washed down, he's only met with a little resistance when he asks Morgan and Reader to leave before it happens.
A/N: This is super long for a oneshot because there's so much dialogue but I swear the ending is cute!
...
Another day as part of the BAU, another case.
"Case must be local, JJ said not to bring a go-bag." Spencer spoke as the two of you exited the elevator in a hurry, Morgan and Prentiss following close behind.
"What's the army doing here?" Morgan questioned.
"What the hell is going on?" you and Prentiss asked at the same time at the immense amount of people rushing throughout the bullpen.
The four of you entered the roundtable room to meet JJ, Hotch, Rossi and someone you've never seen before. There was a tray of pills on the table in little containers alongside cups of water.
"Guys, this is Dr. Linda Kimura. She's chief of Special Pathogens at the CDC," JJ introduced the stranger. You and the team stood around the table.
"Hello," you say to her with a slight nod.
"Hello, I'm sorry to meet under these circumstances," she says somberly.
"What circumstances?" asks Spencer looking around at the team for an explanation.
"We need to get started," Hotch says monotonously.
"Last night 25 people checked into emergency rooms in and around Annapolis. They were all at the same park after 2 pm yesterday. Within 10 hours, the first victim died. It's now just past 7 am the next day, we have 12 people dead," JJ shared with a singular glance at her watch.
"Lung failure and black lesions..." Morgan trails off.
"Anthrax?" you ask looking to Dr. Kimura.
Spencer shakes his head, "Anthrax doesn't kill this fast."
"This strain does," Dr. Kimura responds softly.
"What are we doing about potential mass targets- airports, malls, trains?" Prentiss asks.
Hotch looks at her before responding, "There's a media blackout."
"We're not telling the public?" you ask incredulously.
"We'd have a mass exodus," Morgan says to you.
"The psychology of group panic would cause more deaths than this last attack." Rossi states.
"Yeah, and if this does get out, the person who did this might go underground or destroy their samples." Spencer says.
"Or if they wanted attention and didn't get its they might attack again." Prentiss argues. "Doesn't the public have the right to know that?"
"If there is another attack, there's no way we'll be able to keep it quiet. Our best chance of protecting the public is by building a profile as quickly as we can," Hotch declares.
"What do we know about this strain?" Spencer asks Dr. Kimura.
"The spores are weaponized, reduced to a respiral ideal that attacks deep in the lungs. Odorless and invisible," she responds.
"A sophisticated strain. Only a scientist would know how to do that," Rossi inputs.
"These lesions are doubling in size in a matter of hours," Morgan shares holding a picture up.
