The British East India Company came to India as traders in spices, a very important commodity in Europe back then as it was used to preserve meat. Apart from that, they primarily traded in silk, cotton, indigo dye, tea and opium. They landed in the Indian subcontinent on ,August 24 1608 AD , at the port of Surat.

Who brought British to India?
Ans. The British landed on the Indian Subcontinent at the port of Surat on August 24, 1608 AD for the purpose of trade, but after 7 years British got royal order (i.e. Farman) to establish a factory at Surat under the leadership of Sir Thomas Roe (Ambassador of James I).

How did India became British Colony?
Ans. The British had direct or indirect control over all of present-day India before the middle of the 19th century. ... As a result, the East India Company lost its powers of government and British India formally came under direct British rule, with an appointed Governor-General of India.
