A week passed like the wind and soon came the weekend. The Arora's have organized a welcome home party for Madhav. Somehow, since he came to school, the boy always stayed silent. If it wasn't for the fierce look on his face, Zoya would think he's shy. He had the entire school's attention from the very first day. But staying silent is making people think he's a pushover. It has been in the back of my mind and I don't like it. Why do I have to think about him? He's not going to help me find my dad's murderer. It's a complete waste of my time but I couldn't help. That day Zoya dressed up to her efforts. She's not only perfect but gorgeous that night. With a flowy wine-colored dress and matching earrings, she looked like someone who came straight out of a Hollywood film. She originally wanted to go with a red net-clothed lehenga but it was a last moment thing and she didn't have enough time to order one. The glassy red diamond shaped purse of hers is a really attractive accessory. It can easily make up for the dress. Should I just hook up with someone tonight? This dress sure is teasing. She thought. Zoya had an obsessive phase when it comes to sex. Last year after THE break up, she went on hooking up with everything with two legs and the thing between them. To the point that she even hooked up with girls. Zoya is not a lesbian but somehow, she feels safer with girls. Maybe it's because she was hurt by too many men. Zoya has passed through the phase now but it's still not bad to have some fun once in a while.
She took off to the Arora mansion at 7pm, with the thought of fun in her mind but who knew that later that night, she will lose her peace of mind. She took a break from driving and let her driver take her to the party. She was sure that tonight, that the Arora's are going to push Madhav into the face of every person at the party. Even though Madhav interests Zoya, she still can't take a wrong step with him. He's an heir of a top teil corporation which means a beneficial friendship is to be formed. The pathway to the main door after passing through the front gate is clear. Media is usually not invited to these kinds of private parties among the town families. So, it's not a surprise that the Arora's took special care in guarding the mansion from curious reporters. You'll know how refreshing it is if you were ever subjected to such scrutiny. It's like no matter where you go there are eyes everywhere. All you have to do is something as small as spilling some wine and it'll be a scandal.
A few years ago, one of their seniors went to the wrong restroom and no one in the party even knew about it until the next day, when the CelebFare magazine printed the photos from every possible angle with the title "The rich high schooler's hobbies". later the Mourya's made the reporter regret it but still the damage was done. As soon as Zoya entered the ballroom, the smell of champagne mixed with money hovers around in the air. This party is not coming home for Madhav but also hers. This will be the first party that Zoya's attending after coming home. So, as she stepped into the hall, slowly people started turning towards her. Zoya felt glad that she dressed up, looking at the way people are paying attention to her. Two years back, if this was to happen, Zoya would've obscured herself from the world like a snail in it shell. At that time the boys used to help her at any social gathering. Thinking back, Zoya was so scared of social events that she preferred to stay at home. I was such a milksop. She thought to herself.
She walked forward, crossing eyes with no one. She finds the boys lounging at the pool table. As she approaches them, Veer stands up from the single person couch to make space for her and joins Ayan on the sofa.
"Mr. Khan is here." says Ayan. Mr. Khan is one of the very important board-members of chand steel industries. Chand steels is one of Chahal's many companies. The family has hands in many other industries but chand is where most of their power lies. That is exactly why Veer started to work for that company. He was learning the ropes for two years already and was able to take charge this year. Mr. Khan's investment is important for Zoya as she has to balance out the shares that she secretly bought from the shareholders to make them lose authority. Mr. Khan is a very trusted person as he is rational and insists on having a neutral opinion on everything. But deep down he always supported the people he admired and Zoya's father was one of them. Zoya trusts Mr. Khan as he can help with the board member relations better than anyone.
"let's give it some time. I'll talk to him after sometime. We shouldn't look too obvious."
"don't you think we'll be obvious anyway when we approach him?" says Ayan.
"that's a given but this leaves little space for people's imagination and you know, word spreads faster when we look desperate." Aryan replies steeling Zoya's exact thoughts.
Zoya smiles at how in sync they can be. But nonetheless Zoya keeps her concentration on who attended the event. It's surprising that her mother seems to be absent. It looks like her mother is keeping a low profile these days. This is so not like her.
"Why is my mom MIA these days. She isn't at home either. Are you still keeping tabs on her?" Zoya asks Veer.
"Yes. She has been in the dharavsi beach-house for the past two days. But it seems she is staying alone. What I don't get is she hasn't come out until now. There is no sound or traces of life nearby. No matter how I think about it. It still feels suspicious. I decided to wait a bit longer before making an assumption."
"has she been in contact with any of her friends in the recent days?"
"I don't think so. But in a world, where burner phones and jammers exist, I wouldn't be too sure."
"Then try harder." Zoya says.
"But isn't suspecting Mrs. Akhtar a bit too..." starts Aryan but shuts up seeing Zoya's expression.
"it doesn't matter if she has something to do with my father's death or not. She's still a burden we have to take care of and she's up to no good to begin with." Zoya says. "We still have a lot to handle. So, I hope you don't slack off for reasons like affection." Zoya's voice is as sharp as a knife as she says this.
"Zoya, I didn't mean it like that. You know I've always wanted the best for you" Ayan says.
"And I already have it." Zoya replies.
Frustration takes over Ayan's face. He didn't want to upset her but it felt like she's in too deep in this and it's not good. He knows she's not the same Zoya as she used to be. But he wants her to love again, preferably, him. He's asking for too much as she won't be able to become normal until she completes her revenge. All he needs to do is wait.
