I was summoned 3 days later to attend the grand room for the Pharaoh in my nicer clothes. I'd taken a bath and ascended the steps with Fai-hon at my back, probably to ensure a prompt arrival without trouble.
Once I'd approached the usual performance hall, only the drummer and the familiar woman who played the lute whom I'd rehearsed with before were sat patiently in the corner. I'd been instructed to sit among them.
"What is this?" I'd asked the small woman, feeling a sense of comfort at her familiarity.
"Keep quiet, the Pharaoh will arrive soon." She'd said curtly and without glancing my way, however behind her cold warning I still felt deep within that the fact that she'd spoken up and said anything at all could be seen as some sort of odd form of protection for what was to come.
She'd been right. The pharaoh had bounded in with an impatient aura of confidence and shoved a cup of beer from his hand off to a servant before standing in the middle of the room and gazing around.
"What is this, sand? Clean it up," he'd motioned to the mounted patch of dust accumulated in the corner of the room. "and cloths, the tables need cloths you fools." Servants sprinted around at his frantic demands. Eventually his gaze turned on us as we huddled into the corner, and it began to feel much more like the drummer and the lute player were gathered behind me for safety.
"You three! Stand up don't just sit there, play something...mellow!" he commanded. I cleared my throat and looked at the others for support. They both looked silently at me, leaving the burden of song choice to me.
"Ben the two of us need look no more...we both found what we were looking for—"
"Not that!" the pharaoh screamed with detest. I stopped abruptly.
"For his wife." The woman at my shoulder whispered to my taken aback expression. I blinked astounded, racking my mind and then started again.
"Uh...okay you do this." I began a soft beat box at the drummer and he quickly picked up on the rhythm. "and I need this melody..." I hummed and she soon found the right chords with her lute. When I was satisfied I began.
"Looking in the river...took me by surprise." I tensed witnessing the pharaoh stop where he stood with his back to us all, just waiting for something to bark at. "I can't help but see you. Running often through my mind." His shoulders seemed to relax when he finally realized I was singing a love song.
"And flowers! Where are the flowers?" he bellowed through the room. Suddenly flower's were thrust up in pots from every angle to appease the pharaohs demands.
Geez, I wander what's gotten in to him. I thought absentmindedly as the musicians took my cue for the key change. Back in 1988, you couldn't pay me to be this unprepared.
When things were somewhat presentable, the pharaoh dusted off one last table himself in a hurried manor and then stood back observing everything.
"Perfect, bring her in."
The doors finally opened and the queen entered the room.
"I demand to know! Why have you bought me down here Fai-hon? What is this..." her words seemed to dry up when she looked around and saw the romantic display. Finally her eyes rested upon the pharaoh and her demeanour changed completely. She floated over to him. "Tchay! You have returned..." she croaked.
