The loud ringing of a phone echoed through the house startling a certain dark-haired boy from his place in the kitchen causing him to knock off the glass off the countertop, shattering it to smithereens and the sound of the glass echoed throughout the house.

A sigh escaped his lips as he turned off the stove looking at the glittering mess on the floor. Drying his hands on the messy apron, he pulled out his phone answering it without a single glance at the caller ID.

His mom had been calling him constantly for the past hour to the point of annoyance - well, he couldn’t blame her since he already ruined breakfast three times this week and had to settle for a bowl of instant ramen.

“Mom, I already told you, there’s no need to send food over-” words moved past his lips without thinking.

He’d been trying to learn some cooking for himself - he really couldn’t depend on his family all the time and his health-conscious self had begun to appear as he grew older and having take-out every day didn’t seem as satisfying now.

However, the voice from the other line caused him to halt in his steps, freezing him in place. His eyes widened and he pulled the phone away from his ear to take a proper look at the contact name. He stood there motionless as though he was struck by lightning.

Breathing hitched, he brought the phone back close to his ears. “T-taehyun-ah?”
A giggle, though blurred with static was heard on the other side. That giggle never failed to make his heart do a few flips no matter how many times he already heard it.
“Yes, hyung. It is me.” the other sighed on the line.

A moment of silence or two; a comfortable one though - they just bask in the virtual presence of the other. Two hearts feeling full at finally being able to hear even the lowest of low decibel from the other - knowing he was doing okay all safe and sound.

He tried to hold it in but an overwhelming rush of emotions washed over the older caused crystal-like tears to cascade down his cheeks; a hand over his mouth in an attempt to muffle the sobs that escaped his lips. He didn’t want the other to hear him.

But it was all too clear to the soldier on the other end of the line. His training required him to pay the tiniest attention to details and his hyung - he noticed every tiny bit of his actions way before he had joined the military. The one person he cared for and had given his heart to. Not that he wouldn’t notice it either way but it just helped.

His wedding ring shone under the dim lights of the car - still in his uniform, his body was sore from the harsh training last night. They’d been traveling for a few hours now and probably would have reached home in a few more
He’d planned on giving him a surprise right on the front porch of their house but his heart couldn’t handle waiting any longer. He had plans to surprise the elder like suddenly appearing on the doorstep or knocking on the window of their kitchen where they kept their plants. Or perhaps go to his workplace for a grand romantic gesture.

But all these plans were thrown away by the longing in his heart to finally hear the voice of his angel who had made himself a home right there in the small cavity of his chest.

The moment he stepped into the car, he passed out of exhaustion. The harsh heat of the sun sucking the energy out of him accompanied by the heavy training of the morning before they were dismissed for a month from the base camp had taken a toll on him.

Rocky roads and the sound of the radio blurred into the background as he heard the uneven breaths of his lover on the other side. It shattered his heart - a glossy layer forming in his own orbs but held it in for he wasn’t alone in his car ride home.

“Hyung, how have you been,” he sighed into the phone, carefully choosing his words in the presence of the other officers. His chief looked at him for a brief moment giving him a small nod and turned up the volume of the radio.

Responding with a thankful smile, his body went lax in the back of the car, pressing his back on the cushioned seat and let out a breath. He was finally able to focus on the phone call; reassured that his conversation would remain just between him and his lover with no one around to eavesdrop.

“I- I am fine,” he let out a small breath,“ -now that I heard from you.”

He could sense the older drawing circles on the surface closest to him. “How’s training?”

He let out a dry laugh, “Like always.”
Beomgyu hummed in response still a little shaken, a little fidgety at the sudden phone call. “I thought the next time you’d call was Sunday.”

He’d mentally prepared himself to talk to Taehyun after two weeks from their last phone call. The boy had been given extra tasks that week which meant he’d have less time to talk to him; Beomgyu understood it but he wouldn’t deny that he felt lonely in their spacious house and grateful that his job kept him busy from upsetting thoughts. It was him who still chose to be with Taehyun despite knowing the consequences of being with a soldier.

“Yeah,” Taehyun felt his heart warm up at the mention. He remembered the details - no matter how tedious his own schedule would be, he would always remember. Beomgyu always did.

“D’you like the surprise?” He said his voice in a high whisper.

Beomgyu walked past the kitchen counter to sit on the couch as the shards of glass lay on the floor in a glittery mess under the dull lights. He would just clean it up later, Taehyun was more important anyways.

“I love the surprise, thank you.” he giggled while playing with the string of his apron. “Was trying to cook something for me in a long time.”

A gasp was heard from the other end. He could imagine the look in the face of the other - eyes wide and eyebrows raised with a hand over his mouth in disbelief. He felt his heart flutter just by the mere thought of it.

If the boy was next to him, Beomgyu would have laughed and bonked their heads together to hide the embarrassment on his face in the crook of the younger’s neck. He wished he was here now, he’d let him see his face no matter.

Taehyun on the other hand got a little worried. “You tried cooking? Is mom sick-” before he could even finish his sentence the other cut him off.

“Everyone’s fine. I just wanted to try something. Just working on my laptop all day or watching movies doesn’t really make the place seem lively, y’know?”
The smile on the face of the soldier dimmed down. Oh, how he wished he could caress the face of the older and hold him in his warm embrace he so dearly craved. But his responsibility towards his own country held him back from giving in to his desires.

There were times when he would try to help Taehyun while he cooked back when they were in university; the couple had decided to move in together that year. The elder was in charge of cleaning up while the younger would make food. It worked out for them just right. Though most of the time Beomgyu entered the kitchen with the intention to help would always result in a mini-disaster.

“How do you always end up dropping the bowl?” the younger male asks while the said boy would just smile sheepishly in response and envelop Taehyun in a tight hug to compensate.

Needless to say, it was Taehyun’s favorite method of compensation. An added reward if he pretended to be sulky and garner a few kisses from him.

He knew how much Beomgyu loved physical affection even if he never said it outwardly. He’d always wanna wake up to a small cuddle session and a little peck. No matter how many times they did that, he’d always giggle - a giggle that could make a wilting bud bloom again, even the harshest of cold never felt harsh when he was with the brunette.
Everything seemed magical when it was with him.

Then there was the year when the couple had finally graduated; a few months before Taehyun’s military training began. A bottle of champagne and a few snacks in the warmth of their homes was all they needed for the celebration. Not to mention Yeonjun, Soobin and Huening Kai who’d always be there at the smallest of gatherings.

It was just right.
