Chapter Thirteen - Cordially Invited

After their encounter with Mordred and Grendel, Gungi and Byph met up with the others. They were informed that they were invited to a to dinner, hosted by Jacques Schnee. They decided that this was the perfect opportunity to search for clues regarding Jacques's election. As they made their way to the Schnee Manor, they were led to the dining room where Jacques greets them. Ironwood, Penny, Winter and Clover Ebi were led to the dining room while the rest stayed behind at the foyer. Lord Scourge soon joined the rest. Upon seeing Lord Scourge, Jacques became uneasy.

Jacques: I....I don't believe I've made your acquaintance.

Scourge said nothing as he observes Jacques. Also in the dining room were two members of the Atlas Council and Robyn Hill. Meanwhile at the foyer, the Kybuck Clan sense something wrong with this.

Petro: I have a bad feeling about this.

Katooni: Something about all this is out of place.

Ganodi: Do you think Jadus or Salem are involved in this?

Katooni: Possibly. Weiss, you know this place better than anyone. Maybe there's something that might give us the answers we need.

Weiss: I'll be in touch.

As Weiss prepares to search her father's study, she is stopped by Whitley.

Whitley: Dear sister, I was hoping we could use this time to catch up.

Petro quickly realized that Whitley would be a problem. Without hesitation, Petro walks up to Whitley and taps him on the shoulder.

Whitley: Do you mind? I'm trying to catch up with my sister.

Petro: You have nothing to say to Weiss. You will sit down and let her go about your business.

Whitley: I have nothing to say to Weiss. I will sit down and let her go about her business.

Whitley walks away from Weiss and sits down. Weiss remembered Petro doing the same thing to Jacques some time ago.

Weiss: Another one of your mind tricks?

Petro: Maybe I should poke around with you in case my mind trick is needed.

With that, Petro followed Weiss to Jacques's study. Meanwhile back at the dining room, Scourge watched as Jacques attempts to cast doubt on Ironwood's leadership. Every once in a while, Jacques would cast his eyes on Scourge, only to look away.

Jacques: And I'm afraid there's more than just your choices that have brought harm to our citizens as of late. Have your forces found any additional evidence as to who is slaughtering innocent civilians down in Mantle?

Scourge: As if the people of Mantle were your concern.

Jacques: Excuse me?

Scourge: I sense much fear in you. You reek of it. Do not bother trying to hide it from me.

As Scourge said this, Jacques became visibly nervous. Ironwood took note of this.

Scourge: I sense deception in you. A deception that only you know. It is a deception I am very well accustomed to. Everything that has transpired here was not of your doing. It was your master.

Jacques became even more nervous. He tries to deflect the conversation about Ironwood's leadership, but Scourge doesn't relent. Meanwhile, Petro and Weiss made their way to Jacques's office. As they were about to search the office, they were approached by Weiss's mother.

Willow: I'm sorry I couldn't come down for your party, I'm... afraid I'm not feeling well.

Weiss: Um... it's okay, mom. It's fine.

Willow: What are you doing i...in your father's office?

Weiss: Just looking for something I left.

Petro was about to get ready to use the Mind Trick on Willow, but Weiss stops him.

Weiss: I need to use father's computer.

Willow: Why?

Weiss: Because I think he may have done something. Something wrong.

Willow: I thought we all simply assumed that at this point.

Willow soon informs Weiss that Jacques started locking his computer. However, Willow then hands Weiss a Scroll from the desk.

Willow: You haven't come back to stay, have you?

Weiss: No.

Willow: Good. A man came by. I'm afraid your father may be involved in something more dangerous than he realizes. No matter what happens, Weiss... please don't forget about your brother.

Weiss nods her head to her mother with sadness in her eyes. After that moment, Weiss and Petro look over the footage on the scroll. The footage shows Jacques speaking to a figure obscured in shadow. The figure was soon revealed to be Darth Jadus.

Jacques(Scroll): Of....of course, Lord Jadus. My loyalty to you remains.

Darth Jadus(Scroll): Know this, Jacques. I will grant you only one chance to prove your worth to me. I will not tolerate failure. You have failed to live up to my expectations. When you win your seat, I expect that my will be done. Do not fail me, Jacques Schnee. I will not be so forgiving.

Jacques(Scroll): As....as you wish, Lord Jadus.

In that moment, Petro and Weiss realized that Jacques was in fact working for Darth Jadus. The revelation this shocked Weiss.

Petro: That son of a bitch!

Weiss watched in shock as her father bowed before Darth Jadus. With that information now known, Petro and Weiss moved quickly. Meanwhile, Arthur Watts shuts off Mantle's heating grid. The temperature of Mantle's air drops enough for the rain to become snow. At the same time, a gunship arrives in Mantle bearing the symbol of the White Fang. As it approaches the blockade, the ship suddenly activates a cloaking system. In that moment, both Darth Jadus and Salem had set events in motion that would bring about chaos in Atlas.
