12:40 pm (six hours earlier).
"Are you free after school?"Liam asked Meridian.
Wondering if he had already made plans she asks "Why, what do you have in mind?"
"How many times have I said you do not answer a question with a question, how rude."
Seeing that he was getting irritated Meridian replied him, because Liam just had to be Liam and get irritated by people answering he's question with a question.
"I have to go to my part-time job, sorry,"
"Ohhhh how could I forget, today is Wednesday right?""Yeah and I still have to get j-dope from the mechanic." Meri says.
Hearing what Meridian said Liam bursts into laughter."I still can't believe you named your bike j-dope, that's like the most stupidest name I've ever heard." the sentence he had just said made Meri to replay it again in her head making her to question him.
"Really? 'stupidest'?." she turned her face towards Liam wondering how in the world he was her best friend and he had this 'I know what I said and I'm not taking it back' look on his face.
"Last time I checked aren't you supposed to have football practice after school?" Meri asked.
"Nah, coach called in sick"
5:23 pm.
Meridian had finally gotten home after the fifteen minute taxi ride. She would have walked home from 'Brynes cafe' her workplace but she was too tired to walk after all the work she had done. Meri was so happy when her two hour shift was done, going to tell Joe her boss she was done she collected her daily salary which was sometimes twenty five dollars depending on the amount of people who came in that day. Meridian had decided she'd need to start working her first choice was Brynes cafe because most of the students came here after school had closed, especially the cheerleaders knowing Joe almost all her life when she asked for the work at his cafe he had given her the job right away saying he had been looking for an extra hand recently, so it was a win-win for both of them.
Meridian had contemplated for a long time whether she should take a taxi or not, but finally she gave in. Thinking about how she earned twenty one dollars and five cents during the drive she remembered the big bulky pervert who was wearing a suit alongside his friends that kept eyeing her, Meri's insides cringed when she remembered how he kept staring at her. Paying the taxi driver she got out of the car and prepped herself on what was to come and without a doubt when entered her house, her mum and stepdad were arguing in the living room. When she passed them, they didn't even notice Meridian had arrived, and she left it that way. Going up the stairs she got into her room before someone jumped on her.
"Meri! You're back!"
"Hey champ, easy you're going to break my bones" Meridian said while getting her little brother off her.
"Good to see you came here like I told you. So how was school?" Ever since her mum and stepdad had started arguing over a week ago Meridian had told Matt her six year old stepbrother to always come to her room when they started arguing, because it was less noisy.
"School was okay. We have a neeew teacher, her name is Miss Bridger she is sooo nice." Matt says while slurring his words, a bad habit of his.
"That's great champ!" Meri says while opening her bag. "Guess what I got for you" she says bringing out a chocolate bar from her bag making Matt squeel with delight.
"Thank you, thank you" he says whilst
jumping."Don't tell mum okay. Have you had lunch?" she asks him before he nods to her question.
"You know what you'll do for me Matt? Eat your chocolate bar then go to sleep on my bed okay." she says with a little bit of coaxing when she hears a tiny okay.
"Good" Meri says before giving Matt a small smile.
Meridian was seven when her father Yeong Taen and her mother Rachel Makinde divorced, that was the worst day of her life. She loved her mum and dad and seeing them separate was so heartbreaking. Meri got her facial features from her dad while she got her tall height and dark skin from her mum, being mixed she was lighter than most blacks and couldn't decide whether she was Asian or African.
A year after Meri's parents had divorced her mum became pregnant and got married to her stepdad Phil Harris the year after. Although they had been living under the same roof for six years Meridian never really liked him, she saw Phil as someone who was trying to take her Dad's place in her heart but she loved her younger stepbrother Matt.
It wasn't like Phil had ever done something bad to her, everything about him was so weird but she couldn't tell her mum that. Phil made her mum somewhat happy until recently when they started arguing everyday because Rachel found out Phil had been gambling.
6:29pm
Meridian gets jolted up from sleep by the sound of the front door being slammed. Running towards her window Meri sees her mum stomping out of the house. Wearing what she usually wore when going to the mall, a baggie hoodie and reaped jeans which made her mum look like Meri at first glance, only that her mum was darker than her. Meri was about to leave when a car moving at full speed catches her eye, everything goes in slow motion before she hears a scream which is undoubtedly from herself.
