She finally gave up with trying to convince me of this weird story, and I knew that I would have to be dealing with her a few more times since I was assigned to this.
It wasn't the first time I had met a mother who was crazy, but I still felt a bit bad for the woman. She seemed genuinely disturbed, and she looked like she hadn't left the hospital in days.
"I know you want to stay with your son right now, but I think you need to go home and clear your head."
She just laughed as she pulled her son closer.
I walked out to let them have a few minutes, and a doctor from the hospital approached me.
He said, "Thank you so much for taking this into higher hands. We will be sending all the information we have to you."
I nodded, "Thank you, but you aren't the doctor I talked with. Where is he?"
"Oh he's sick."
His eyes changed colors quickly, but I pretended not to notice.
He was rather suspicious, and being with the CDC I had learned to read these signs of disclosure.
He was definitely hiding something.
"Have you tested everyone in the hospital for possible infection?" I asked.
His eye twitched as I shifted my weight.
"No, but we definitely can."
"Aren't you a doctor?"
"Yes."
He looked around like I should have noticed the poster on the wall with his name and picture on it.
I did.
"Then, tell me, why aren't you doing your job? That is something you learn in high school biology. Make sure the virus hasn't spread because this can lead to an outbreak."
His lips quivered, and he blinked rapidly. His eye color changed very noticeably now, but I still wasn't ready to tell him.
"Precautions, Dr. Johnson. Precautions. I suggest you send out the memo to everyone in this hospital right away. You don't want to lose your job. Do you?"
"No, mam," he muttered as he hurried away. I laughed at the speed his short legs were able to move.
This chapter is short just to introduce another character. Stella is a big surprise in the book, and she might bring a lot more surprises in the future.
