It was quiet. Excruciatingly quiet.
Hushed conversations from others in the darkness of the night in the dingy bar. Numerous emotions are scattered throughout the setting. Negative emotions. During a time and place of the night, in which several choose to sulk. Incessantly drinking their problems. The aura of loss, tragedy, and regret spilled within the bar, mingling with the putrid scent of alcohol.
Devastation among disappointment. He could not help but blame himself. Private, their relationship should have settled. Enemies were urgent in striking any destruction unto him. Regret overflowed his being. "It's all my fault." Steve sighed. "I was supposed to be looking after her."
"She's safe now, that's all that matters," Bucky reassures.
Reluctant, the blond slightly nods, "Well, yeah. I guess you're right."
Bucky smiled, "Of course I am. I'm always right and I've always been right," continuing to take a swing of his beer.
Steve smirked, shaking his head. He shifted in his seat, "So..." He trailed off, "When were you gonna tell me that you found your soulmate?"
Bucky blanked, unexpecting the sudden query. The slight mentioning of soulmates makes him sick. A mess. An absolute mess of recognizing someone to be made for him, yet belonging to someone else. Disloyal it was of her. Being impatient of him and espousing someone else.
They were centuries apart. Perhaps, it was his error for exercising his time.
Attempting to brush the subject off, Bucky uttered, "It happened a while ago."
Yet, Steve insisted. "Tell me about her."
The brunet could not begin to describe her. Plentiful, delightful words began to settle his cognizance, "She's amazing." The man sighed, a drawled, longing sigh, "But it doesn't matter. It's impossible."
"Hey, nothing's impossible. Just look at my wife and me. We still haven't seen the colors but I know that we're made for each other."
Bucky is tense. The bile arising his throat. Though, he could not help himself from asking a question that bugged him to no end, "What would happen if she saw the colors with someone else?"
The familiar question ruined Steve. Living is not an alternative without her; she kept him sane, mending him day by day. "I've asked myself that question way too many times, and I can't ever find an answer."
"Would you let her go?"
Steve is unsure. Letting her go would suggest letting himself go. "I don't know. But... it would be the right thing to do." He pauses, taking a sip of his own beer, "But I've lost everything. I wouldn't stand losing her as well."
Bucky is squirming, incredibly uneasy he could faint. Guilty. The guilt is clawing at him. It always is when the subject pertains to her.
