"reporting to you live, i'm wilbur soot. this is an emergency broadcast that will be translated in sign language and many other languages, as we want this broadcast to reach as many people as possible. we are here today with mr. jonathan schlatt, head of NASA, for an important message."
"as you know, everybody in the world is watching this right now. this important message is regarding the meteors the dream collection. a couple of days ago, we sent six space shuttles into space to try and redirect the meteor's path. this, however, failed to stop the meteors. there are about fifty to sixty tiny meteors headed towards earth along with an abnormally large meteor, which we've named meteor 404, that will crash into earth. there is nothing anybody can do. i need everybody to remain calm as the government is doing its best to reduce panic. our scientists estimate that this meteor shower will hit our planet in ten days." the pixelated screen flashed off of schlatt's masculine face to show a black cover with tiny white dots. it was faint, but there were obviously several clumps of dots near the top of the screen. there was another speck, a lot bigger compared to the rest of the dots, near the center of the clump. the head of NASA began to explain what was happening in the photo when karl clicked off the television broadcast with shaky hands. he turned to face his boyfriend.
well, there's the proof nick was waiting for.
"what happens now..?" karl asked, voice shaking.
"i don't know," nick simply replied. he was at a loss for words. he walked up to his boyfriend and just held him.
this couldn't be happening, could it? he was so sure it was a false alarm last week when the first broadcast aired, how could it already be confirmed and have a set date? how could he protect karl from this? is there something he could do for him? karl doesn't deserve this. he deserves to go out into the world and show them what he is made of. he was supposed to live until he was old and wise, so why has Fate decided to take that away from him? he wanted to curse out at the sky for taking so many opportunities away from his lover.
"i'm scared, nick,"
"me too."
"what do we do?" karl questioned.
he didn't know what to do. karl was always the one with bright ideas, the fun, spontaneous plans. right now, nothing was going through his mind. it felt empty, no coherent thoughts spiraling correctly.
well, except one.
why?
his brain tried desperately to find an explanation to the question invading his mind, pushing the rest of his thoughts out. it was like this one word, strung together by three letters of the english alphabet, was the only thing he has ever known. so hard he tried to push this word out of his mind, but failed. he was trapped in his mind with this one-syllable term taunting him.
"we need to go out and live."
that snapped karl out of his trance. he pulled his head back from the comfortable spot on nick's shoulder and looked into his luminous mahogany eyes, "what?"
"listen, whether this is real or not, we have ten days to go out and live the best we can. no more worries, no more complaints: we just go out into the world and live. we should spend this time doing as much as we can, okay?"
"people are panicking, sap, nothing will be open," karl said, using his special nickname he had given to nick after a walk in a forest that resulted in nick's entire hand becoming covered with sap from a great oak tree. nick liked this name his boyfriend gave him; it reminded him of nature and childhood. it also somewhat went with karl's nickname, cherry.
cherry and sap.
"then we do something with just the two of us, something we can do ourselves. we will figure it out together as we go."
