Nightmares

Peter had been having nightmares for years. Before the bite, it was about his parents, but they only came once every few months. No one knew except May and Ben knew. Until it was just May.

The nightmares came more frequently after Ben died. He saw his uncle bleeding out right in front of him, saw flashes back in time of when he had his aunt and uncle and was happy. Still, they weren't too bad, as he'd only had to find May three times in the last eight months.

The problem was getting worse, though. He dreamed almost every night, waking up in a cold sweat or screaming. Usually no one came because May was working late or on a night shift, and he wasn't about to call someone to come over to help him. Ned would talk to him if it wasn't too late, or even MJ once, but it was normally three in the morning so he didn't wake them up.

Ever since the Vulture incident and getting dropped into the freezing lake, the dreams had been about that. It was usually the same thing. The feeling of not being able to breath, trapped in some way and struggling to get out. Hearing metal and concrete and other debris shift on top of him due to his enhanced hearing or tangled in sopping fabric that was steadily sinking, ready to drag him to a watery grave.

Tonight he woke and bolted straight up in bed, panting hard. Tonight it had been the plane crash. Being smashed down repeatedly into rough sand, and losing consciousness, then waking up to the Vulture's wings about to explode. Running into the searing fire and dragging hot metal off his foe, then carrying him out with the strength he had left. He hadn't even been able to get home; he was almost too beat up and tired to climb to the top of the roller coaster and web himself to a beam so he wouldn't fall.

He sighed, glancing at his clock. It was 4:17 in the morning, too early to get a start in the day but also too late to fall back asleep. He dragged himself out of bed and padded into the bathroom. Splashing cold water on his face to wake himself up more, he stared at his reflection. There were dark bags under his eyes and he looked kinda pale. It was just because he couldn't sleep for more than a few hours anymore. He would patrol as late as possible, climb back into his window and collapse, exhausted from school and Spider-Manning, just to startle awake mere hours later. It sucked, but he didn't really know what to do.

Peter decided to get an early start on his English Lit essay that was due the next week, and got a good portion done before showering and grabbing a quick breakfast. He walked through the apartment door and started down the stairs because the chances of the elevator being broken and him getting stuck weren't good.

He met up with Ned outside Delmar's and they immediately started talking about the new Star Wars movie coming out soon. They made it to school and immediately ran into Flash who seems to be waiting for them. Peter just rolled his eyes and pushed Ned away to their lockers as Flash started with his usual insults and nicknames.

"Don't bother, it's not worth it. If you get detention your mom's going to kill you." Peter muttered in his friend's ear, steering them away from the conflict.

"Yeah, you're right. But I still think you should show him who's boss some time." Ned replied as he spun the combination lock.

"He's just a jerk. It doesn't matter, and it doesn't bother me anyway."

"Yeah, okay. See you in second period!" Ned called as the bell rang for their first class. Peter peeled off towards the English classroom and sat down in his usual spot.

The day went just as usual, with Flash's comments and eating lunch with Ned and MJ. As soon as he started down the steps to walk home, he remembered it was a lab day. Grinning, he bounced towards the black Audi waiting near the curb for him. He happened to glance behind him and saw Flash with his jaw hanging open as Peter hopped in the back seat and greeted Happy. It was even better that the license plate read "STARK03," meaning it was one of the billionaire's personal cars. Hopefully he wouldn't get grief about the internship not being real anymore.
