Alarms

Humans! Probably the smartest beings in the universe. Yet so fragile.

Having no clue about the future, just blindly tread in the dark with a weak lamp of hope while planning large things ahead.

We have no control on nature, or the world; even ourselves.

Even though we have no certainty of waking up  tomorrow, we rely on alarms.

That horrible device.

Disrupts all thoughts. It literally has just one job to do. Bring you back to the reality.

What if it fails to do so?

=============================================================================

(*Hears background noises in a state of half sleep)

(Alarm ringing) (Sweeping on the floor) (News channel broadcast tune) (Sister chatting on phone yelling at her boyfriend) (Neighbors arguing outside the window) (Horns of vehicles outside) (News anchor: A man commits suicide by jumping off the building in Sector12, reporters say...) (Sister: What is the matter with you? Why are you still with that bitch?... Are you...) (Sweeping noise intensifies) (Alarm noise oscillates) (Neighbor: Keep your dog away from my door...) (Multiple horns on the street) (News anchor: ... police confirm that the man was on medi...) (Sweeping stops) (Alarm noise intensifies)

I gasped and woke up. I had the nightmare, again.

Past few days I had trouble sleeping properly. I kept having these weird dreams. Those didn't make any sense. I started maintaining a diary to record as much as I can remember after I wake up.

(*Evening)

I had a rough day at the school. Too much homework. Probably I piled it up. I'll have to keep up and finish it by the night. Dreams are weird, yet fascinating. Everything feels so real until you get lucid. Then it starts breaking apart. I am surprised how it synchronizes almost always with my alarm.

(*Night)

I dozed off at my desk, but I didn't realize. I am now awake in a studio apartment. It seems like it has been years. Where am I? Who am I? Why does this feel so odd? Where is Mom and Dad? Rose? Anyone? Jimmy?

There's loud thumping on the door. There's no peephole. I opened the door. 2 strong men barge in and grab me by the collar. "Where is my money?", one asked. "I don't know!", I was barely able to speak. He threw me back towards the window. I looked outside. The sun was bright, it was indeed a hot sunny day. I trembled and weakly fell on the floor. It felt like I hadn't eaten for years. Something felt unusual about the room. The floor had a carpet a few moments ago. Now it has wooden planks. Shaped like an inverted roof. The man drew out a knife. That was scary. I looked at his face, the sun rays painted it bright yellow. I was able to see the window behind him, which had night and I could see the moon. I was sensing something unusual, until I noticed the carpet on the roof. That's it! The room is upside down. This is a dream. I can escape it. I got up and I asked them to wait. Gestured. They obeyed. I ran towards the open window and jumped outside. I could feel the fall.

I felt a hypnic jerk. I woke up. I was in bed. It was a log cabin. There was a snow storm outside. It was freezing out there. I heard a roar outside. I approached the window. A paw scratched the window from outside. It was a bear. He looked at me before he roared again. He started circling the cabin. I could sense him outside. It was scary. The door was locked. The windows were closed. I felt safe. I checked the entire room. Again and again. Suddenly, the half portion of the cabin near the door seemed disappeared as I turned back. The bear circled from the left, saw the opening and charged towards me. He raised the paw as he roared.
