[ xxiv. movie night ]
➸➸➸
SOMEHOW, WILLA DEVERAUX FOUND herself roped into going to the island movie night by none other than Kiara Carrera. The spontaneous zen-like girl had insisted that after the disappointment of their morning treasure hunt that they deserved a moment to have some fun. To let loose, to breathe, and to act like simple teenagers.
Easier said than done, Willa had said in response.
And so, upon the initial invitation that Kiara had thrown on her during their drive back to the Figure Eight, Willa refused it, wanting nothing more than to go back to her room and hide beneath her duvet covers. But, of course, Kiara would not allow such a pitiful excuse. She had not been asking Willa to go. She had been telling her that she would.
On the bright side, Willa was relieved to find, only a few hours later, that she was not alone in her misery. Pope Heyward and JJ Maybank had been dragged to the dreadful event, too.
"Come on, guys! We need to find a good spot!"
The vibrantly orange sun was just beginning to set over the island of Kildare, setting the open and grassy area in a soft hazy glow, and painting the clear sky in a striking contrast of reds and pinks. The view that evening was such a different sight when compared to the darkened storm clouds from the morning. At least, no matter what the weather attempted to pull throughout the day, it never rained, and the air remained cool. Not chilly but not absolutely scorching. A perfect night for an outdoor movie.
It appeared that more than half of the island thought the same, for the local park where the movie was to be aired was bustling with currently bodies. Willa had not seen this many people gathered in one place since last June's senior graduation.
All around her kooks, pogues, and tourons were gathering for the evening special, but Willa could still easily sense the tensed divides between groups. Out of dozens and dozens of individuals that walked to and fro, she was one of the few that dared to stand within the no-man's land of shifting clique currents as she walked in between Pope and JJ. Two pogues and kook, all helping one another to carry each other's movie-night gear. Two pogues and a kook, all moving in the same direction, staying together rather than trying to part.
The four teenagers continued to push deeper into the park, letting Kiara lead the way. Less than a hundred yards away, centered amongst a small clutter of trees, was a massive blow-up movie screen. The projector was set up nearby and Willa was surprised that the community members responsible for throwing this event had managed to find a movie that most of the town had not already seen. Over her shoulder, even when she kept her attention forward as she walked, Willa could hear the excited chatter of the townspeople as they hurried to collect their snacks from the concession stand before the film began.
"Man, I'm so glad that they're still doing this!" Kiara grinned. "Keep calm . . . Carry on . . . Back to O-B-X life . . . Oh, here we go. Is this a good spot, you think?"
