"Eliza! Give it back!"
"Not my fault you're short!" Eliza teased her twin brother, who (though not by much) was a bit shorter than his sister.
"Elizabeth, stop heckling your brother. You know, one day he'll be taller than you and you won't be glad you're on his bad side," their mother chastised the young girl. "Give Steve back his ball, and go watch him outside. Lord knows I don't need him breaking a finger or something, I'll never hear the end of it."
The twins, Steven and Elizabeth (Steve and Eliza for short), were ten years old, however you'd never know they were twins until you got to know them.
Eliza was taller than her brother, as previously mentioned, with wavy, ash brown hair cut at her shoulders and hazel eyes. Complete contrast to her brother, who had straight, dirty blonde hair and blue eyes. And that's how their mother knew they were fraternal twins.
Steve was also weaker and plagued with asthma. Him and his determination would get him killed one day at the rate he was going.
Eliza adored her brother, despite how much she picked on him for his size. She just didn't want him getting hurt. Physically, or otherwise.
The two exited the house and Steve turned and threw the ball at his sister, who caught it with a grin. "I win, you give me something from your candy stash," Steve demanded.
"Okay, but if you lose you gotta do my chores tomorrow after school," Eliza bargained. Steve rolled his eyes, but agreed.
Eliza chucked the ball back at her brother, and smiled.
The game was pretty simple. Catch the ball at all costs. Of course there was rules around sabatoge, like if you purposely made it impossible for the other person to catch the ball, you lost. It didn't require much skill, but the two had made up the game when they were six after Eliza didn't want to pick up the mess of toys the two had made.
She won, of course, and after that rules were established, and the game had been the bet-deciding game it had been since they created it.
Steve threw the ball at his sister with all his strength, which wasn't much, but enough that when she caught it, it almost slipped from her hands. She threw it back, aiming for his legs, and he caught it even still, quickly crouching to retrieve the flying ball.
He threw it again, and hit the doorframe.
"That counts!"
"What?! No it doesn't, you threw it beside me, you're supposed to throw it at me! That's part of the rules."
"You could've moved, not my fault my aim sucks," he shrugged. "Pay up."
Eliza hated that he was right, and sauntered off into her bedroom with Steve trailing behind her. She sighed, pulling out a bag of candy she'd been collecting for a while now. "Take your pick."
He pulled out a butterscotch, unwrapped it, and threw it in his mouth. A feeling of pride washing over him. "That was fun. I love that game."
"You only love it when you win."
"Correct."
