January 1945

Russia.

This is one of the last bases that needed raided to take down HYDRA, the team was excited.

Eliza finished strapping a first aid kit onto her brother's arm. It was nothing complex, holding an antibiotic ointment and a tourniquet, just in case.

"You're all ready from my point," Eliza approved, giving them a thumbs up and a smile. The team all returned her enthusiasm.

It was cold, and they were all waiting on a train that would take them into the base, virtually undetected.

Eliza waited with the boys until they would be ready for take off down the zip line.

"Remember when I made you ride the Cyclone? At Coney Island?" Bucky asks quizzically, leering over the edge looking into the gorge below. The mountain was steep and sharp.

"And he threw up!" Eliza gives a sly smile, remembering the day clearly.

Bucky chuckled, "This isn't payback is it?"

Steve grins stupidly at his friend, "Now why would I do a thing like that?"

"Jerk," Bucky laughs.

"Punk." Steve replied, looking over the edge himself.

Suddenly a train whistle sounds through the valley of the mountains, and it's time for the group to meet the train to HYDRA.

"Ready, boys?" Eliza asks loudly.

"Nope," Bucky replies, taking out his equipment.

"Ready as I'm gonna be," Steve tells her.

"Good luck," she says, watching them all gear their T-Bars.

"All aboard, Gentlemen! Mind the gap," Falsworth yells, his voice laced with anxiety.

"Okay, this is a very short, very fast train. We've got a ten second window, tops," Steve instructs his team of three, including Bucky and Jones. Eliza smiles, he's gotten much better with his leadership, thanks to Bucky's lectures. "Mistime it, and you're a bug on the windshield."

Dugan checks the time on his watch with the speed of the train, "Better move it, bugs!"

The three of them hook themselves into the zip line, and Dernier raises his hand. Eliza can see Bucky's hands shaking ever so slightly as he holds onto the t-bar.

Then Dernier drops his hand, and the three zip away out of sight.

Eliza hadn't seen Steve since he came back from the mission, or Bucky for that matter. Normally she was their first visit, but not this time. She just assumed they were busy with the mission debriefing, but it'd been way longer than that.

Eliza sat on a daybed, reading a book, but mostly looking out the window in her barrack at the base they were staying at while the boys were on their mission. Suddenly, Peggy walked into the room holding a few files, followed by Steve, whose face was flushed red.

"Eliza, we have something we need to discuss with you," Peggy says quietly, offering a sad smile.

"Is everything okay?" Eliza asked quietly. Steve threw his head back and took a deep breath.

"No, honestly," he admits. He lets out a shuddering sigh and looks to Peggy. "I would just hand her the file, I can't-" Steve seemed extremely overwhelmed, urging himself not to cry.

"Steve," Eliza presses, she looks at Peggy, who for once looks like she's about to break into tears. "Is it.. was... it Bucky?"

Steve sits on the day bed with her and scoops his sister into a hug. That was all the confirmation Eliza needed to know that her Bucky was gone.

"His body?" She asked quietly.

Peggy shook her head, pursing her lips and holding out the file. Eliza took it, her hands shaking as she opened it, reading the report. Tears dripped from her eyes as she read what had happened on the train.

She would never see Bucky again.

A sob escaped her lips and she threw her hand over her mouth to muffle her following cries. Her hands fell to her lap and she clutched the file against her chest. She had nothing left of him. The only one she could ever say she truly loved.

Steve held her closely and Peggy turned around to give privacy, both were saddened over Bucky's death, but to hear her heart breaking in real time was completely different.

Eliza sucked in a shaky breath, making her best attempt to compose herself. She looked to Steve, who was teary eyed, and then to Peggy, "Remember when you asked me about your organization," she began, closing the file and passing it towards her. Peggy slowly turned back around with a look of curiosity and shock. "I want in."
