You Want The Truth

A couple of hours later, all the feeling started to go back into my body. I don't even know where Steve is taking us. My mind is just jumbled and processing everything that Zola said. A photo of me and Steve from World War II? How is that even possible? I was never in World War II. Is that why Steve gave me that weird look the first time we met? I remember the first time Tony introduced Steve and me. It was after the Avengers were assembled and I walked in on their little victory party. Steve's eyes were wide and his mouth hung open. Then he tried to talk to me and started asking me all these weird questions. How my life was going? If he seemed familiar to me?

We arrived at our destination. I looked up at the unfamiliar house. Steve glanced at me as I crossed my arms. That pretty much gave him a short answer of me not talking to him. He sighed before he began knocking on the door. Moments later, a man opened the door - very confused about the surprised visit.

"Hey, man," the guy greeted Steve.

Steve motioned to me. "Sam, this is Raven," he introduced me. He motioned to Sam. "Raven, this is Sam Wilson."

Sam held his hand out to me to shake. I glanced at it before shaking his hand. "Nice to meet you," I said.

Steve sighed and said, "I'm sorry about this. We need a place to lay low."

I nodded as I explained further. "Everyone we know is trying to kill us." And we can't lay low with Tony, that's the first place SHIELD would look.

Sam looked between me and Steve. "Not everyone," he replied. He opened his door wide enough for us to enter. Steve motioned me to enter first. I gave him a small glare before entering Sam's house.

Sam was nice enough to let us use his bathroom to shower and wash our clothes while we lay low for a while. I was reading one of Sam's books while Steve was drying his hair.

"Still not talking to me?" Steve asked through the mirror. I ignored him and continued reading the book. Steve walked out of the bathroom and leaned against the doorway. He proceeded into the room until he sat on the foot of the bed. "I know you have a lot of questions. It might be confusing and -"

I glanced up from the book and raised my brow. "Very."

"And I will explain everything to you."

I slammed the book. "Explain how some bad guy in your era has a photo of us because, if I recall, I haven't met you until a few months ago."

"I know. And you have every right not to talk to me -"

"Is that the reason why you were being so nice to me?" I questioned.

"No."

I started thinking back about Peggy back at the hospital. "That explains why Peggy was acting so weird when she saw me."

"You were always her favorite person."

"Don't change the subject, Rogers. How could you keep something like this from me?" I sighed. "You knew me all this time and you didn't say anything 'til now."

Steve looked down in shame. "I'm sorry, Raven. I just...I had to make sure it was you. I don't know how you did it...but I knew you before the serum."

"Before?"

Steve nodded. "Before I joined the army. Before I became Captain America. You and I actually knew each other. You were actually one of my best friends that didn't look down on me because I was small." He let out a small chuckle as he motioned to his eyes. "You actually did that thing with your eyes to scare off a few soldiers that were picking on me."

Then I remembered the video at the museum. "So that video of that girl from the museum..."

"Yeah. It was you."

"Was that why you were so weirded out with the kiss?"

"No, it wasn't that." Steve ran his hand down his face. "You were - You were dating my other best friend at the time. And I thought I was betraying him because I know how much he loved you and how you mean a lot to him."

I raised my brow at him. "Ok, you must be joking right now? Meeting you pre-serum is one thing, but telling me that I dated your best friend is where I draw the line."

"Is it?" Steve asked. "You saw that video. You can't deny that you saw someone kissing you."

"It was the side of the head," I corrected. "And that could have been anyone." I furrowed my brows when Steve started to chuckle. "Now, what's so funny?"

"You said the same thing when I talked to you about Bucky."

I blinked a few times as I repeated. "Bucky?" I remember Steve telling me all about Bucky one night. "You mean, your 'sweet talking' best friend? The same one who went on dates with any woman who glances his way? That Bucky."

Steve winced about how bad it sounds. "Yes."

"Ok, now I know you're lying."

"You know I don't lie." He turned his body and looked at me. "Raven, I'm sorry I kept this from you. I - I wanted to come clean with everything. But seeing your life as it is now...I didn't want to mess it up."

"So...you kept this big secret from me because you didn't want to mess up my life?" I concluded. Steve nodded. I leaned forward. Steve expected the worst and covered his arm, scared that I was about to hit him. But I wrapped my arms around him and pulled him close, embracing the idiot. "Thanks."

Steve froze momentarily before he wrapped one of his arms around me and returned the hug.

I pulled away and gave him a pointed look. "Now, care to explain the whole letting me go first whenever you open a door?"

"It's something I promised Bucky I'll do whenever he's not here with you," he explained.

I sighed. "You really are a good friend if you promised to do something stupid like that."

Steve started to laugh as Sam entered the room. "I made breakfast," he announced. "If you guys...eat that sort of thing." He motioned to me. "Steve told me you mostly drink herbal tea in the morning. I don't have anything besides chamomile."

"That'll do," I said as I got up. I looked back at Steve. "And if you keep anything secret from me again...I'll feed your soul to the demons."

Sam's mouth dropped as I went toward the kitchen. "Is she the spawn of Satan or something?"

Steve couldn't help but smile. "Something like that."
