Who Am I?

My entire body felt like lead. Everything was just sore and I was exhausted. I tried to open my eyes, everything was still a bit fuzzy. I could feel the sweat drip down my face as I scanned the unfamiliar room. Barely moving an inch, there was a sharp pain on my side. When I glanced down, I saw that my side was bandaged but I was wearing a different shirt than my usual attire. That's when my eyes went wide as I recalled being on the Helicarrier.

What happened? Where's Steve? What happened to Sam, Natasha, and Fury? Did they manage to stop Pierce? Where the hell am I?

Ignoring the pain in my body, I tried to sit up from the bed until I felt someone's hands on my shoulders. Unaware of who it is, my eyes glowed white as I created a small barrier around my body before letting it explode so whoever grabbed me was knocked away from me. But it wasn't a good idea because I felt my skin stretch a bit from the wounds. I groaned as I held my side. Once I looked up, I immediately held my free hand up when I saw that I blasted Bucky away from me. He grunted as he stood and tried to take a step closer to me.

"Stay right there," I threatened as dark matter began to form around my hand.

Bucky ignored me. Instead, he took cautious steps toward me while slowly raising his hands up. "I'm not going to hurt you."

"Funny, since this was your fault in the first place." I took a deep breath as I got out of the bed. "Where the hell am I?"

"I don't know. No one was living here when I found it," he said. Bucky glanced at my side. "You tore your stitches."

Yeah, right. As if I'm going to fall for some trick like that so he can attack me. "Your point." Ok, maybe it wasn't a trick. I could feel my blood oozing out of my gauze. "Where's Steve?"

"I don't know."

My eyes glowed white as I levitated Bucky and pinned him to the wall. Bucky was struggling so I tightened my grip as I stumbled toward him. "Wrong answer."

"I swear, I don't know," he choked. "The Helicarrier crashed and he fell over." My eyes widened at the news. "But he's safe. I dragged him to shore."

"And I'm supposed to believe you? You were two seconds away from killing me back at the Helicarrier."

Bucky tilted his head back as he tried to get air in. "'Til the end of the line," he gasped out.

"What?"

"Steve...he told me who I was and...I started to remember things."

Remember things? I dropped Bucky to the ground. "What things?"

Bucky went through a coughing fit as air finally went into his lungs. "Not a lot. Just bits and pieces of us. And of you." He looked up at me. "You got to believe me, doll face."

I knelt in front of him. Now that I'm closer to him, I got a better view of his eyes. The last time I saw them this close was back by Steve's apartment. Same thing as last time, I found myself calming down. And the way he's looking at me is different. He didn't have that murderous glint he had before.

"Yeah, too bad I don't know you," I responded. I tried to ignore that small pain that flashed across Bucky's eyes. "I don't know if it's a big misunderstanding or anything but I never met you until recently. Steve doesn't understand how either since I was never in World War II." Tired of crouching, I moved so I was sitting next to Bucky. My back was leaning against the wall and I stared at the wall across from us. "But I believe in Steve so...if he says you two knew me, then something must have happened for me to be there."

My chest began beating fast as the pain became unbearable. I shut my eyes tightly while I panted.

"You need to be patched up again," Bucky stated.

I shook my head. "I'm fin -" My breathing soon hitched when he began to lift the hem of my shirt. His metal hand laid on my stomach as he used the other to hold my shirt above the bloody gauze. I found myself shivering when his fingers trailed up and gently tore the tape off.

"Your stitches opened." He moved away from me. "Don't move, I'll be back."

"Not like I can go anywhere," I deadpanned but it got him to chuckle. Bucky went toward the small bag that was stashed in one corner of the room and began to pull out the first aid kit. "Why did you bring me here, anyway?" Bucky froze. "You could have left me with Steve and be far away from here. But instead, you basically kidnapped me and brought me to an abandoned home. Just to stitch me up? Come on, Buck, that seems a bit suspicious, don't you think?"

Bucky sighed as he grabbed the first aid kit and walked over to me. "To be honest, I don't know myself. I just saw you lying there in the water." He got on his knees with a needle and thread in his hand. "Somehow, I found myself making my way over to you. The moment I saw your face -" I winced when he began to sow my wound shut, after he sanitized the needle and all that. "- I felt warm." He finished stitching me up and cut the thread. "And I didn't want to leave you behind."

"Again, you were the one who shot me."

I nearly jumped when Bucky slowly cupped my face. "I'm sorry about that, doll."

I grabbed his wrist and pushed it away from me. "Whatever," I puffed out. Letting out another breath, Bucky resumed his position next to me. "I guess I should say thank you for stitching me up, though."

"You're welcome."

We sat like that in complete silence for a few good minutes. If Bucky is slowly regaining his memory, I guess I can't leave him to deal with this alone. And Steve would hate me if I left his best friend unattended.

"Let's go," I said as I stood up.

"To where?" Bucky asked.

If Bucky wants to know what kind of man he is, then I think this would be the best place to start. I had to get a few disguises for us. Since Bucky helped HYDRA, I'm pretty sure SHIELD is looking for him.

"What is this place?" Bucky asked.

"The Smithsonian Institution," I answered as I fixed Bucky's hat.

"What are we doing here?"

"Well, I might not know you, and I can't exactly call Steve with SHIELD on your ass, so I thought this would be the next best thing. You want to know the kind of man you are..." Bucky and I stopped. He was completely frozen as his mouth flew open. "I figure, let them tell you."

Bucky was completely speechless when he saw a whole panel in the museum dedicated to him.
