Mia's POV
"It's me, Zayn."
The dark figure steps farther out from the shadows.
A smile spreads on my face as I lower my gun, quickly sliding it back in its place.
We both rush to each other, taking one another in warm embrace.
"I've missed you Zayn. It's been too long."
"It has," he agrees burying his nose into my neck.
We pull apart and just look at each other. We've both changed a lot in just a few months.
The tanned, skinny boy I once knew has become paler, more muscular, taller, and even more attractive.
His hair is styled now, pulled up into a quiff with a blonde streak through the front.
"Wow, you've really grown up since we last spoke."
He keeps looking me up and down making my cheeks burn a little.
-.-
"So, how long are you going to be in town for?" I ask, curled up on the couch as Zayn comes back in the living room with some popcorn and candy.
"However long I wish," he states simply, taking a seat next to me.
We sit there quietly for a moment, not knowing what else to talk about.
"Look, I'm sorry about leaving before. So much happened and I needed some time to sort myself out." He confesses with a serious look on his face.
"I know, I just wish you would've told me. I would've gone with you." I give a weak smile, trying not to remember the pain I was going through when he left that day.
Zayn had always been my best friend. We'd grown up together on the same street.
We had this love/hate relationship that no one else understood. We'd fight all the time but were practically inseparable.
When my family died I went into a state of depression and rage. Zayn was always there to calm me down or hold me when I broke down.
Then we started to train together.
We'd box, did target practice with guns, and fought each other with swords. More often than not, we'd accidentally hurt the other really badly then take care of each other's injuries.
Then one day while bare knuckle boxing each other, Zayn said seven little words that cut deeper than any sword could ever cut me.
"I have to go away for a while."
I just went home and cried for the next couple of days, never answering when Zayn called or tried to visit.
Eventually it all stopped. He'd left and I'd never felt more alone.
I started to train more vigorously and more hours at a time, trying to forget my sorrows.
I adjust myself so I'm sitting up a little straighter.
"Where did you even go?"
I'd been trying to figure that part out ever since he left.
"I went to Japan."
"What?! Why Japan?" I ask, shocked he went that far away. I thought he just went to a different state or Mexico.
Zayn looks deeply into my eyes with guilt and loneliness.
"There's a teacher in Japan. He's a legend for his fighting and skills with a blade. Near the end of my training, he died... I never wanted to hurt you, I just wanted to become the best fighter possible so I could protect you."
I can't help but let my emotions get the better of me.
"I don't need you to protect me Zayn. You saw it back there, I can defend myself."
"Those were low class vampires; do you really think you can handle some middle class vampires, let alone a high class vampire?"
My emotions boil over and I yell, "For your information I've killed several Middle Class vampires, and with some more training I'll be able to kill a High Class vamp no problem. I don't need you treating me like a baby!"
Zayn looks a bit hurt by me snapping at him, making me feel guilty.
"*Sigh* Look, I'm sorry I snapped at you. I just need some sleep, I've got school tomorrow. You're welcome to stay up and watch a movie yourself."
"No you're right. We'd better get to bed, we don't want to be late."
Zayn gives me a wink before dumping out the wasted popcorn and putting away the candy.
"Wait, what do you mean 'WE'?" I ask following him into the kitchen.
"Oh yeah, I'm going to summer school with you tomorrow."
"Great, we're never going to get any work done, are we?" I snort.
Zayn laughs loudly, "Man have I missed your cute little snorts."
I pretend to be irritated by his remark by making a face at him. "Don't make fun of my snorting!"God, he's making me revert back to being a complete child.
"No I'm serious, I think you have the cutest laugh ever." He flashes a sincere smile at me.
Before it gets too awkward Zayn says, "I've heard what people call you- well, you're cover name. Lilith. Is it's pretty."
"Yeah I chose it to honor my sister Lily."
"I guess I need a secret name too if we're going to be partners."
"Whoa whoa whoa, when did I agree for you to be my sidekick?" I fold my arms and raise an eyebrow.
Zayn chuckles, "I never said 'sidekick'."
I roll my eyes, "Whatever."
"Someone needs to make sure you don't get in over your head. And I figure you're going to need my awesome skills."
"OK fine, you can come with me on patrols tomorrow night. Just don't mess up and ruin my reputation."
He throws his palms up in surrender.
"And you're right about the cover name. You'll also need some kind of disguise.
I rub my chin between my thumb and index finger, thinking about a cool name for him.
Zayn announces, "I kind of liked 'Tiriq'. I think it sounds pretty cool."
"No no no, that won't do."
"Gee thanks for thinking that over Mia." Zayn shakes his head with a smile on his face.
"How about Obsidian?" I suggest, seeing if he likes it.
"Obsidian and Lilith! I like it," he response enthusiastically.
"OK Obsidian, I'm gonna go to bed now. Good night!"
I laugh as I walk out towards my bedroom, hearing Zayn repeat the names Obsidian over and over again in different voices.
I'm so worn out, it's been a really long day and I'm ready for bed.
As soon as I lay down in bed, I pass out probably snoring loudly.
