Two Years Later
"Father!" You cheerfully call out upon spotting him on his balcony, looking out across the city. He's watching your citizens mull about, all engrossed in their own adventures and tasks.
"Ah, my girl," he smiles, turning to you with open arms. He leans his cane against the pillar beside himself as you slip into his embrace, glad to have him back to his old self. He awoke from his coma a couple months after your crowning, and he's been on a journey to recovery ever since. He's regained the majority of his strength, and the only real help he needs now is the cane.
"Have you seen Roseanne?" You ask as you pull away, scratching the back of your head. He reaches up to readjust the tiara you wear -- it's the more practical version of the royal crown, seeing as how it's lighter and more comfortable for daily life.
"I believe she's downstairs in the library." He responds, nodding his head as if he's reminding himself as well.
"Thank you; I'll head down." You kiss his cheek and hug him again, put further at ease as he rubs your back.
"Love you, kid."
"Love you, too," you call over your shoulder, waving as you exit and make your way to the stairs.
----
Throngs of citizens gather together in various areas around the ground floor of the palace, trading books and knowledge as they converse. You witness some of them teaching each other, while others instruct children that are taking notes on parchment.
They wave as you pass, sending smiles and thumbs up to greet you. You return the gestures in full, wondering how you got so lucky to have such great people to serve. Ruling is riddled with hardships and sacrifices, but it helps to have subjects like this; they make the bad days easier, and you know they'll always stand by you.
Your footfalls sound off against the stone floor as you open the library's large doors, breathing in that nostalgic smell. It brings so many good memories back; perhaps that's why you love spending so much time here.
"Rosieee," you call, dragging her name out sweetly as you scan the aisles for her. Your eyes dart between the books on the shelves as you work your way through the rows, maneuvering past people reading.
The sound of snickering captures your attention, stopping you dead in your tracks. You'd know that sound anywhere.
"Hmm, is that a little munchkin that I hear?" You ask, slowly approaching the area that you now know is occupied by your target. Sweet giggles fill the air, making a smile appear on your face that's nearly impossible to hide.
"It sure would be a shame if I... JUMPED OUT AND SCARED THEM!!" You shout, rounding the corner as you lock eyes with your daughter. A high pitched squeal pierces the air as she jumps backwards, bumping into Rosé, and they both start laughing at themselves. The young girl didn't expect you to find her; she thought she was doing a brilliant job of concealing herself, though she was basically out in the open. Apparently she's of the belief that if her face is hidden, the rest of her is hidden.
You'll have to work on that.
"Hi mama," she says sweetly, her little voice sounding adorable as it wraps around the words, releasing them in the slight accent that toddlers have.
"Hi, baby," you kiss her forehead and lift her into your arms, stepping forward to hug Rosé and press your lips to hers. You smile against her when you feel your daughter cover her eyes with her chubby hands, burying her face in your shoulder.
"You just can't stay away from us, can you?" Rosé teases as she pulls back, gazing into your eyes like you hold the secret to the universe. Everyday she finds a new thing to admire about you, and today's seems to be the soft way you're cradling your daughter. You clearly make her feel safe, and given her past, that's precisely what she's been in need of all her life. That fact both breaks and mends Rosé's heart; although Moon didn't have a happy life before she came to the kingdom, now she has the two of you to take care of her, always. You've both worked hard to help her open up and gain her trust, and she's helped you see the world from a new perspective in the process.
