Anastasia POV:
I've been trying to work all morning, but I can't. Not today. I just can't focus. There might be a reason. There is definitely a reason. Something that happened in the past is bugging me. More specifically, what happened 18 years ago today. Today was the day Klaus, my ex-fiancé, proposed. It was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of my life. It was at the time. When I think about it now, the bad memories flood back in, and I have to stop myself from getting emotional.
Tap, tap, tap. I look up to see Ric standing next to my desk while trying to get my attention.
"Are you okay? You've been sitting here doing nothing for the past 3 hours. Come on, let's go out to lunch. It'll be a good distraction. I know this isn't ever a fun day for you," Ric said, standing in front of my desk.
"Yeah, I'll go. I have never been able to turn down free food," I replied.
"Who said I was paying? I will though, just because I know you're having a crappy day," Ric told me. I elbow him in his side and stand up to grab my coat before we leave.
"The kids are in class; the twins are with Damon in Rome, and the little one is in daycare. We have the rest of the day to ourselves. I booked off our work schedule so we don't have anything to do," Ric tells me while we are in the car.
We sit in our usual spot at the grill, and because we come so frequently, the waitress recognizes us and knows what food to bring us. Our food comes very quickly, and before we know it, the check comes. We decided to grab a coffee in the store next door. I go in while Ric waits outside. I order my coffee and wait to the side while they prepare it. I noticed two girls standing in the corner. They keep looking over at me. I can tell they're not human. They must be witches. Why are they so interested in me? It's weird because I don't normally see people I don't know since it's such a small town. Maybe they are new here or just stopping through. I hear my name called and I walk up to get the coffee. While walking back towards the door, one of the women bumps into me, causing both of us to almost spill our coffees.
"Oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to bump into you," she says apologetically.
"It's okay. Are you new in town? I haven't seen you around here before. Is there anything I can do to help?" I question.
"Yes, actually, I am new to town, and there is something you could do to help. I heard that you were the headmistress of the Salvatore School," she says.
I give her a questioning look. "Oh yes, we're witches, and my niece wants to go to your school. She's also supernatural. By the way, I'm Freya, and that is Davina," she says.
"Nice to meet you, Freya and Davina, and yes, I am the head of the Salvatore School. If you want, here's my number. You can call me, and we can set up a meeting and a tour around the school," I tell her while handing her a business card.
"Thanks, we are looking forward to it," she says.
I walked out the door towards Alaric, not hearing them say, "She is even prettier than he describes and paints her." They giggled.
Alaric and I are exhausted from our day and decide to head back home and call it a day early since we took the rest of the day off.
