azalea checked her hair in the mirror one more time before folding the car mirror back up, opening the car door. "this is gonna be a nightmare." she said, letting out a sigh at the sight of her parents new house.alex laughed, grabbing the gift basket from the back seat.
"it wont be that bad, i'm very lovable." he joked, azalea turned around, yanking him closer to her. "oh, were lucky if its just bad." she said, buttoning his dress shirt up one more button. "don't be such a downer! parents love me!" he said, smiling a big smile.
"how many girls parents have you met?" the girl asked, looking up at him. "well there was that one time in 6th grade where i met marias parents for that science project..." he thought. "this is gonna go worse than i thought."
she grabbed alexs hand, holding it tightly as she knocked on the door, saying a quick prayer just before it opened.
the woman just glanced at her daughter, quickly looking alex up and down with an annoyed look on her face. "hello miss!" alex said with a smile.
"trajiste a casa un gringo?" (you brought home a gringo?) azalea sighed, shaking her head. "ay dios mío..." (oh my god...) azalea sighed. "¡no digas el nombre del señor en vano!" (don't say the lords name in vain!)
alex laughed under his breath, clearing his throat, "lo siento, no sabía si iba a saludarte en español o no. soy alexis, encantado de conocerte." (sorry, i didn't know if i was to greet you in spanish or not. i'm alexis, nice to meet you.)
her mother looked shocked, looking back and forth between her daughter and the boy she brought home. she quickly put a smile on her face, "i'm rosa, welcome to our home." she nodded, accent thick.
"¿por qué no me dijiste que hablaba español?" (why didn't you tell me that he could speak spanish?) her mother asked harshly as azalea walked past. "i did, you just weren't listening, mami" azalea spat back in the least rude way she could.
rosa sat down at the table, alex and azalea taking the seats across from her. "i made sopa de lima, i hope thats okay." she said. alex smiled, "sounds great!" azalea let out a quiet sigh, still holding alexs hand under the table.
azalea smiled, sopa de lima was one of her favorite foods, that she couldn't make, one of the only good parts about visiting her dear parents. "wheres dad?" azalea asked. "visiting angel, you know angel and victoria just had their second kid. when are you getting a man and having kids?" she questioned her daughter.
alexs smile dropped a bit, azalea glancing at him to catch it. "ma, i have a man." she said, lifting up their connected hands. "and once we get married, maybe, we'll have kids." her mother squinted her eyes, "quizás?" (maybe) azalea groaned, "were not going through this right now." the girl said, having had the conversation about her probably not having kids with her mother plenty of times.
her mother shook her head, "i'm expecting little ninos and ninas soon." rosa said, "its a shame you only have one kid." azalea said under her breath. "hm?" her mother questioned, "nothing mom! this is great!"
"so what does he do for a living?" she said, pointing at alex. "i stream as well." he said proudly. her mother looked from him to azalea, "que?" "internet videos." azalea nodded. "ay ay, why won't you get a man with a real job." her mother questioned. "mom, he makes mucho dinero" azalea said, making the money motion with her hand. alex laughed, nodding along.
"so where are you from?" rosa asked alex, he swallowed his food, putting his spoon down. "mexico city, moved here a few years ago and i still go back to visit my parents every few months." her mother nodded, sticking er bottom lip out, "ahh, muy rico" "ma, he can speak spanish."
her mother watched as azalea went to get another serving of the soup. "azalea, ¿de verdad necesitas todo eso?" (azalea, do you really need all that?) azalea paused, clearing her throat and putting the spoon back down.
"yes, she does, she's hungry." alex said, grabbing her bowl and serving her with a smug smile. "thank you." azalea muttered as he set her bowl down. "no problem."
"bye mom!" azalea said, waving at her with the biggest fake smile she could put on. once the woman shut the door azalea jumped into alexs arms, "thank you oh my fucking god." she said, wrapping her arms tighter around his neck as she placed kisses all over his face.
he laughed, cupping her face as she got back onto her feet. "for what?" alex asked. "that was equal to risking your life to me, you stood up to my mother, at her own fucking table." she said, hands resting on is upper arms. "well, that was fucking rude!" he said. "oh stop, you're gonna make me cry. god, if i loved that woman then it would be over for you but thanks to all the trauma she caused me, you're just amazing." she said, placing a kiss on his lips.
"alright, alright, in the car." he said with a laugh, patting her cheek.
"honestly, not a huge fan of your mother. i'd rate that a 1/10, maybe a negative after that disgusting comment about you eating." alex said, starting to drive away from the horrid hell house. azalea placed her hand on his arm again, "god, could you get any more perfect?" she joked. "who would've thought, you hate a girls mother and she falls head over heels for you."
