It was a quieter ride home than usual for the Freelance Police. Although they usually dealt with rather ridiculous cases with hilarious hyjinx ensuing, this outing was a bit more rough. Sam had been injured during a brawl and it wasn't just a small scratch. The beast they had butted heads with had really ripped into the canine's arm with his sharp jaws.
As Sam drove with one hand, Max worked to try and tie a piece of torn fabric around the wound.
"Couldn't we have waited til we got home? The car keeps moving and I can't tie a good knot!" Max complained.
"No can do Max. If we waited til we got home I would probably bleed out everywhere and die a very gruesome death."
"Right, then we'd never be able to sell this car one day! The seats would be ruined!"
Max continued to work at tying a tight knot as Sam kept his eyes (mostly) focused on the road. It wasn't long before the duo arrived back at the office. Sam parked the car lazily in the alleyway near their building and hopped out of the car with a wince. Max followed, his eyes staying glued to his hands which were now soaked in Sam's blood.
"I know what you're thinking, don't you dare." Sam scolded.
"Aw c'mon Sam! I just wanted to see if your blood has a distinct flavor! I have heard that the blood of chubby people tastes like sulphur and raspberry jam!" Max exclaimed as he stuck his tongue out.
"Cut it out, chowderhead." Sam grabbed Max's arm and picked up the small rabbity thing, taking him into the office rather forcefully.
"What's gotten into you? You usually don't handle me like this on weeknights!" Max commented as he squirmed in Sam's grasp. Once they were in the office, Sam put his smaller partner back on the ground and sat down at his desk with a huff.
"Sorry about the roughness little pal, my head's just pounding like crazy." The large canine rubbed his head a bit and whined, which caused Max to giggle.
"Man when did you become such a baby, Sam?" He asked as he walked over and removed the fabric tied around Sam's arm to inspect the wound.
As he finally removed the stained material, Max's expression turned from his usual grin to shock.
"Well someone's white blood cells deserve a promotion for working overtime." Max said.
"What are you talking about, Max?"
"The bite is already mostly healed!" The lagomorph exclaimed as he pointed to his arm.
Max was correct, the wound was already almost healed. The two stared in shock at one another before Max broke the tension with a wisecrack per usual.
"Well at least we won't have to pay out the ass for stitches!" He chuckled a bit.
Max observed Sam for a moment and his smile fell. Sam's head seemed to really be bothering him something awful. The rabbit hardly ever felt empathy for other people in pain, in fact he often found it hilarious, but here he felt a small ache in his chest seeing his friend whimpering in pain.
"Sam? You okay?" He finally asked after a long silence.
Sam didn't reply for a moment, but he eventually managed to speak.
"I need some aspirin, little buddy. Could you run to the store and get some? I'd get it myself but I'm a bit out of commission right now..." The dog whined softly once again as he lifted one of his hands to his head.
"Sure, Sam." Max said as he grabbed some cash and headed down quickly to Bosco's.Max tried his very hardest not to get distracted on his shopping trip to get some medicine for Sam. If this were for any other reason he would have surely goofed off, but he could tell Sam really wasn't feeling well.
Max had already purchased the medication and had it, well, wherever he stored objects in his strange body.
He hopped up the steps quickly and raced up to the office. With a loud thud he burst through the door, tripping as he did so.
"Sam! I got the pills!" He called out as he looked around the office. Sam seemed to be nowhere in sight. "Sam? Saaaam?" Still no response.
Max's eyes then seemed to wander to Sam's hat which was tossed lazily on the floor by the desk. Sam would never toss aside his hat so carelessly. Something seemed to be very wrong here.
"Sam? Sam c'mon! I'm the only one allowed to make jokes that cause genuine concern!" Max shouted as he walked around the office in search of his partner.
There was soon a loud crash from near the closet that quickly caught Max's attention. It was there that he noticed Sam bent over on all fours digging through the closet like a madman.
"What the hell are you doing?!" Max shouted. "Here, take these before you start marking the walls."
Sam turned to face Max and the lagomorph stepped back from the initial shock of seeing what his friend had become. The canine looked very frightening with much sharper teeth and newly grown claws. His body seemed to be more muscular with untamed fur bursting through a few tears in his suit.
"Sam?" Max asked quietly. "You're...a werewolf! Oh my god this is so cool! I have to show you to all our friends!" Max said with a large smile across his face.
Sam only lifted his lip into a snarl at the lagomorph as he slowly started approaching him.
"Easy fido, you don't wanna eat me do you? I mean god knows what I'm made of!" Max joked nervously as he backed away from his beastly companion.
"C'mon Sam! It's me Max! We've only known each other for several decades now, you know me!"
The werewolf didn't seem to respond to Max's attempts to jog his memory. Max didn't often fear for his life, but he knew that Sam would never forgive himself if he ripped his little buddy to shreds, even if he had no control over his actions at the time.
In another rare instance, Max dropped the wisecracks and tried to figure out how to get Sam to snap out of this. "Hey! Remember when we stopped Hugh Bliss from hypnotizing everyone into becoming sickeningly nice zombies?" Max asked, but he was only met with a growl from Sam. Obviously simply describing their past adventures wasn't going to cut it here.
Max tried his best to think quickly, scanning the area closest to him for something he could use. His eyes landed on a bottle of Banang that was on the desk.
Without hesitation, Max swiped the bottle and held it out to Sam shouting: "BANAAAANG!"Pause. Silence.
