The only sounds that echoed throughout the alleyway that night were the sounds of tearing flesh and quiet cries from Max. He didn't want to give up, but what more could he do for Sam? There was no way he could gain control in the state he was in.
"Sam, I'm so sorry." Max finally said as he wiped a few stray tears away. "Without you leading me I really have no idea what I'm doing. I'm just a bumbling moron..."
It was strange for Max to put himself down like this. Usually he hid his self-loathing behind a false bravado, but now he felt defeated. "I miss you bossing me around. If we were conquering this together we'd already have it all figured out." He sniffled. "I'm begging you Sam, please just try to fight it? I can't do this by myself." Once again, the lagomorph approached Sam without fear despite what happened previously.
Sam's lip curled into a threatening snarl as Max grew close and wrapped his arms around him. Max ignored the growling and simply rubbed his partner's back as if to comfort him. "I know you can't hear me right now, but I just wanted to say that..." He paused for a long while. "...I love you Sam. I've been wanting to say that for what feels like centuries. When you hugged me after I came out of that time machine I realized that we're inseparable. We can't be the Freelance Police without each other." Max chuckled softly. "God I didn't expect to get all mushy but it's true Sam. I love you lots. Could you maybe try to come back for me?"
Sam's snarling continued for a moment longer, but it soon stopped as the glorious first light of day peered over the tall New York City skyline.
Max stepped back as he heard Sam begin to whine in discomfort. The canine's body slowly reverted itself back to how it was before and Max couldn't have been happier to see his friend back to normal.
"Sam!!" Max said as he once again embraced the dog tightly and buried his face into his chest.
"Hey little pal. What's with all the theatrics? You usually don't cry unless you want me to buy you something." Sam chuckled.
Max didn't say another word, rather he cupped Sam's face in his hands and kissed his partner right on the lips. At first Sam seemed hesitant, but he returned the kiss. The pair kissed quite passionately for a moment until they both needed to part lips to breathe.
"What was that for?" Sam asked.
"I realized a lot of shit last night Sam." Max replied. "I realized that without you I'd just be some moron stumbling his way through life. Last night was so hard. I tried to figure out how to cure you and-"
"Hey what happened to your cheek?"
Max froze and put his hand over the slashes on his cheek to conceal them. "That's not important Sam."
"Did I do that to you last night...?"
"No! I mean- It wasn't you! You weren't thinking straight! It's not a big deal!"
"Max you need to tell me if I hurt you!"
"SHUT UP!" Max shouted, causing them both to go quiet. "Just be quiet. Yes, you scratched me but that wasn't really you. I know you'd never hurt me because I'm the one thing you give a damn about! I realized that you're the one thing I give a damn about! So don't you dare beat yourself up over this!"
Sam's face grew dismal as his worst fears were confirmed. He badly hurt Max last night.
"Let me see it." Sam said.
"No it's fine. It's already scabbed over."
"Max let me see it!"
"I said no!"
Sam suddenly grabbed Max's hand and moved it away from his cheek to reveal four large slashes covering the lagomorph's face. Sam's shoulders drooped.
"See that's why I didn't want you to see it! Don't you dare start beating yourself up about this! I'll say it again, you had ZERO control over yourself last night! I mean for fucks sake Sam I confessed my undying love for you and you hardly batted an eye! I knew it wasn't really you and that the true Sam was trapped."
Sam sighed and rubbed his face a bit. The canine got up and the pair stood awkwardly across from one another for a long silent while.
Sam then slowly moved forward and leaned down to pick up his small companion and held him tightly in his arms. "I love you too, chucklehead."
Max's eyes widened as his gloom look morphed into a smile. He buried his face into Sam's shoulder and let an outpour of emotion suddenly escape. Sam rubbed Max's back gently. "Hush now Max, it's okay. I'm right here little pal. I'll always be right here, okay? I didn't hear everything you said last night, but believe it or not I did catch some of it. It meant a lot to hear that from you, you little rascal."
Max chuckled through his tears. "What if I just said all that because I want you to buy me a limited edition poster I saw at the store?" He joked.
"You crack me up little buddy." Sam replied as he put Max back down and patted his head. "Now let's get you home and disinfect that wound. I'm also getting quite sick of the iron-y taste of blood in my mouth."
"You know you look pretty damn hot covered in the blood of an innocent victim, Sam."
"Oh hush." Sam replied as he hopped in the desoto with Max seating himself beside him. "Wow, I'm surprised you didn't crash the car last night."
"I told you I'm a good driver! I only hit three pedestrians!" Max exclaimed. "Hey Sam, can we go get ice cream after we clean ourselves up?"
"You bet. You deserve a treat for taking such good care of me last night."
"Hehe!" Max's cheeks tinted pink. "Oh stop you old so and so! You're gonna make me cry again! Now shut up and drive! Try to hit all the traffic cones on the way too!"
Sam laughed as he started up the desoto. With that, the Freelance Police rode back to their office to enjoy a fun day together after such a stressful evening. They would worry about a cure for Sam's plight later. For now they only wanted to enjoy each other's company.
