"you're home early," his mother said with a cheerful grin as she stirred something around in a pot on the stove.
"yeah, got bored," the curly-haired boy replied with a shrug, walking over to greet his mother with a kiss on the cheek. "george met some new friends. made me a bit nervous." he stepped up to the cupboards to set the table.
"new friends?" his mother asked, turning to look at the boy as she turned down the heat on the stove. "i thought it was the two of you against the world?" benny scoffed in response, shrugging his shoulders. "guess not," he laughed, setting the bowls around the table. "two new guys now." he sniffed lightly with a roll of his eyes. "it's just been the two of us for years. i'm not certain i'm ready for change."
his mother nodded along as he spoke, shaking her head. "i'm sure these new boys won't cause you any harm," she smiled. "george wouldn't put you in that position, and we both know that."
"i guess you're right," benny nodded. "it just feels. . . weird having other people around. it's different, and you know i hate different."
his mother laughed softly, shaking her head as she began to scoop ladles full of stew into each bowl benny had placed onto the tabletop. "i know, ben," she hummed. "but, you'll be all right." she moved the pot back onto the stove before leaving up the stairs to get benny's sister.
the older girl eventually came down the stairs, after their mother begging once or twice. "you're joking, right? you made slop. . . again?" she rolled her eyes, pulling out a chair across from the shorter boy.
"you know, you could help set the table for once," benny grumbled, pulling the bowl of food closer to himself before shovelling a spoonful into his mouth. "just 'cause your boyfriend broke up with you, doesn't give you the right to be a bitch."
"just eat your food, loser," the girl laughed, rolling her eyes before giving him the finger. "now, kate, that's no way to treat your brother. you know he's. . ." she didn't finish her sentence before sitting down at the end of the table.
"no, go ahead and finish your sentence, ma," benny huffed, pushing the hair out of his eyes as he gazed across the room at the older woman. she shook her head. "it's all right, ben. just eat your dinner." she smiled, beginning to eat her bowl of slop as well.
benny decided it better not to argue, so, he ate his food in silence before leaving to his bedroom. he wasn't sure why he was the one who helped out the most, whilst simultaneously being the one to deal with the most shit from his sister and mother.
he crawled into bed, pulling his phone off of the charger and pulling the device closer to his face. his thumb hovered over george's contact before clicking on the name. it rang once. twice. three times.
your call has been forwarded to an automated voice mailbox. pl-
george declined. he fucking declined his best friend's call. benny hoped it was an accident, that george would call back right away. of course, that didn't happen. he didn't text either. maybe he was getting high with his new friends. maybe he was doing some other type of drug, too?
benny rolled over with a sigh, pulling the covers over his head. was george going to leave him? replace him? would he start to be an asshole to him, too? he was used to assholes by now, but, this felt different. the boy frowned, setting his phone back down on the table, closing his eyes.
he was just looking forward to the weekend. at this point.
