A Sad Happy Ending

It is 5.30am in the morning, it is still dark and the Winter Solstice is approaching. The rustling of the nearby trees and chirping sound of the parakeets blends with the morning calmness. As far as the eyes can see there are miles and miles of trees and mountains, met with morning dew.

Jennie just got done with meditation and is sitting on the porch, with some old song playing in the background.

She leans back on the chair with her eyes closed and listens to the surrounding sounds. A chill runs down her spine and a moment of serenity makes her smile. This has been her ritual for years now.

Suddenly a noise interrupts the moment, and says "morning love." These are the words she's been living for and it fills her with joy.

Everyday she has been waking up just to listen to her sweet voice. She gazes at her affectionately, trying not to blink lest she will miss a moment. She had spent hours just watching Rosie work. For her, Rosie is just the prettiest woman in the world. She indeed looks beautiful in Jennie's blue shirt and prefers to wear Jennie's clothes all the time, and she loves it more on her. Rosie comes to sit on the chair beside her with her feet on her lap. Jennie puts her hands over caressing them, the most beautiful pair of legs she has ever seen though signs of aging cannot be overlooked. Jennie has been a victim of her charm for 15 years now. Both stare at each other, their eyes gleaming with love. A thousand words pass through, without a single sound. They know each other so well that usually a look is enough to talk.

Rosie says she is craving for coffee, Jennie gets up like she does daily and gets Rosie her a strong lightly sweet coffee and some water for herself. Jennie asks about some book she gave Rosie and then a discussion starts over the miserable life of the protagonist. Rosie had never read any books before she met Jennie, and now Jennie selects them for her. Rosie has always been a morning person and now Jennie is too. Suddenly the radio start playing another song, "Can't help falling in love."

Jennie used to sing it for her, and a tear rolls down her cheek. Jennie opened her eyes and comes back to reality. A mistake she has regretted all her life. Rosie is no longer with her but for 15 years Jennie has closed her eyes every single day and remembered every single moment they ever spent together. Jennie still remembers Rosie's graceful movements, her tactlessness, forthright nature and glittering eyes. But now age is taking it's toll and the image is not very vivid. After Rosie, no one has ever cared for her more, perhaps because he has never given anyone a chance. All her life she has loved Rosie even with irrefutable evidence of her Rosie not coming back, though she is no longer waiting. It's just that he couldn't love anyone else and moving on; but the fact that Rosie is happy with her life that gives Jennie immense pleasure because this was the only goal in her life. Jennie smiles with her eyes still wet, standing up to turn off the speakers and leaves for a walk in the woods.
