"I think, therefore I am". One mustn't regard René Descartes use of the word "think" as the mere act of letting thoughts pass our mind. A much more reasonable way to interpret his words comes through understanding that it is the never ending process of twisting and turning thoughts to their exhaustion that makes us be.
