It was a warm day in Beacontown, the sun shining brightly in the blue sky. Golden rays seeped through the clouds, coating the town in a fine light. It was the perfect day to go out, which was what Jesse had planned to do today.

She had to admit, it felt great to be able to take a break from being cooped up in her office, regardless of how much she loved her work.

The wind ruffled her hair as she walked. There was a light breeze, in which Jesse was thankful she had decided to bring a jacket with her too. Citizens stopped to greet her as she passed, some even asking for high-fives. The town was bustling with life. It was truly a great day outside, and Jesse was glad people were able to experience it.

She spotted Lukas' hut near the gates. The idea of visiting him had crossed her mind multiple times, but Jesse never found the time. This was her chance.

Today was his birthday, and Jesse wanted to do something special for him. Walking up to his front door, she raised her hand and knocked. She frowned slightly when she received no reply.

Strange, Jesse thought.

Deciding to knock again, she waited a few moments. Hearing nothing but silence from the other end, she sighed, stepping back.

"Maybe he isn't home," she murmured to herself. But where could he be?

Lukas never kept people waiting too long. Jesse walked over to one of the windows of the hut, glancing inside. The windows were shut, but the curtains were open, allowing a view of the inside of his hut. The living room was tidy, which didn't surprise her. He did a great job taking care of the place.

As she was about to leave, she heard the wooden floorboards creaking under a small weight. She turned to find Lukas' pet ocelot.

"Hey you," Jesse said, crouching down to pet the small ocelot. It seemed to like the gesture, creeping closer. It had become a habit for Jesse, talking to animals. She had developed it when she first met Reuben, and couldn't seem to get rid of it.

After spending a few more minutes with the ocelot, Jesse decided it was time to leave. Bidding goodbye, she left Lukas' hut, wondering where he could have gone.

Jesse knew it wouldn't be hard to find him. There weren't a lot of places where he usually went, so naturally there were only a few places she had to look. She started near the park, where they used to hang out.

The park was empty, apart from a few citizens who were walking their pets. Some were hanging out on the old swing set, rocking back and forth as the wind blew. Lukas often came here if he wanted to go somewhere quiet outside of his hut. When Jesse had asked the reason, he simply said it gave him inspiration for his writing.

Deciding to check the next most possible place, she went to the town square. Lukas often went there to buy supplies, so Jesse wasn't surprised if she found him there. The place wasn't too busy, much to her surprise.

She let out a breath of relief when she spotted Lukas near a stall. He had a bag in his hands, and was opening it up.

"Hey," Jesse called, when she was close enough for him to hear. He looked up, a smile lighting up his face when he saw her.

"Happy birthday, Lukas," she said, wrapping her arms around him in a warm embrace. "Sorry I wasn't able to get you anything."

Lukas waved a hand dismissively, once they separated. "Nah, it's fine. I'm just glad you're here."

"I wouldn't miss it for the world," Jesse replied. "I can't say the same about the others, though."

Lukas nodded. "Yeah, I get it. They're busy. The usual."
