I was holding to my decision to break up with Danny. He was typically good to me, but I was one hundred percent sure that we wouldn't make it out of college together, even if we went to the same college.
Last night we agreed to meet up at the Gloria's Diner. Obviously I was waiting for Danny. He never made it to places on time. I sat for ten minutes waiting for Danny. Then his ringtone blared from my phone. I apologized to the person behind me as I answered.
"I am so sorry! My hangover was a killer and I ended up waking up late. I'll be leaving in a few minutes." I laughed to myself.
"How about I come to you? Calm down."
"Are you sure?" Danny sounded relieved.
"Yep. I'll be there in five minutes." I left out the diner, thankful that I hadn't ordered anything yet. Outside, I unlocked my bike from the bike stand, hopped on and headed north.
A few minutes later, I was outside of Danny's dad's Victorian home. I always liked seeing the beaufiful house.
Danny was waiting for me on the swing set in front of the house. He had on a thin white button up and dark jeans. No shoes.
I was going to miss his adorableness.
"Sorry about everything." He smiled. He gave me a peck on the lips as I sat on the swing next to his.
"It's alright." I replied.
"So I have some important information for you."
"Go for it." It was better that he got everything out while he could still.
"I rejected Oxford." Not what I was expecting. "I'm going to NYU." My mouth dropped. I looked at him. "I didn't want to leave you here, ya know?" He grabbed my hand. "Are you okay, Liz?"
"I came here to breakup with you Danny."
"Was it because I was going to Oxford?" He sounded worried.
"Partly. I figured that we wouldn't make it through college together, no matter what the distance was. I considered everything that we've been through and spread it across college. I figured that you'd either cheat on me, or eventually find me boring. So, why waste years together?" He dropped my hand. I didn't dare look at him.
"Thanks. I didn't know that you hand that little bit of faith in me."
"Oh come on Danny! Don't tell me that you didn't think about breaking up with me!"
"I did think about it okay! But that was only because we were going to be so very far apart." He got up from the swing. "I can't believe you. I know you think sh!t out, but I didn't know you would think that far out. You think us being together a little longer would be a waste of time! What, do you think you would have recovery time of a month and then get back out into the game? You would be trying to find someone to simply date for years. Your lucky I ever asked you out! You're such a repulsive snarky loner, I can't believe I let go of Oxford for you!"
A tear dropped from me. Then much more. I didn't expect him to get that mad. I got up from my swing and faced him.
"So we're done, right?"
"Definitely." I jumped onto my bike and sped away from Danny. I had to stop way too many times to way wipe my eyes.
