You wake up, seeing bright, white lights shining down on your face. You hear the monitor beeping steadily and Steve sitting there, book in hand.

"Steve-" Your voice cracked. Without even saying another syllable, he shoots up and scoots his chair over closer to you.

Steve grabbed your hand, "Y/N." His voice sounded relieved.

"I'm sor- I'm so sorry, Steve." You winced at your pain and bruises that Bucky gave you.

Steve shushes you, "It's okay. All that matters is that you're awake."

You nod lightly.

"He could've killed you, Y/N." Steve sighed out in a disappointing tone.

"I just thought-" You sat up from the hospital bed, "I just wanted to be like you." You admitted.

"Y/N, you don't have to prove anything to me. You are the best partner I can ever work with." Steve honestly answered.

"Yeah? Are you lying?" You laughed as you touched your left rib, caressing it on how bruised it was.

"Of course not." Steve shook his head, studying your wounds.

"I just thought all those times you saved me, I could do you a favor. It would've killed you if you had to fight Bucky. He was your best friend. I couldn't let you see him like that. He wasn't the man you once described to me." You informed as you rested your head on your pillow, turning your head towards Steve.

"So you risked your life. For me?" Steve asked with his eyes raised.

"Yeah, why are you so surprised?" You chuckle.

"I'm not, I just-" Steve studied you for a moment, "I just have the best partner anyone can ask for, that's all." Steve smiled lightly. "And I can't leave you."

"Thank God you said that because I was thinking totally different." You laughed nervously.

"What do you mean?" Steve questioned, confused.

"Oh, it doesn't matter." You shook it off.

"No, Y/N. What?" Steve was not going to let this go by the tone of his voice.

You take a deep breath, "Throughout this mission, I felt like I was always in the way. Like I didn't need to be there because you, Sam or Nat always took care of what needed to be done. I just felt helpless and not even a-" You shook your head.

"Hero?" Steve knew exactly what you were talking about. He nods, understanding.

"Yeah." You breathed out heavily.

"Do not be so hard on yourself, Y/N. You might not be the perfect, strongest hero in people's eyes but what is most important is that I see you as that kind of hero. Nat does, Sam, even." Steve told you.

"Sam? No-" You shake your head and suddenly, the door kicks open and it's Nat and Sam.

"Let me in. I know her." Sam and Nat squeeze their way by the two agents watching your door. Sam shoots them an annoyed look.

Sam noticed you and puts on a bright smile, "There she is. The bravest hero I know." Sam sets down the dozen of flowers next to you and leans on the bar. "One hell of a fight out there."

"I think he's talking to you." You whisper to Steve.

"Y/N-" Sam finished, smiling with pride towards you.

Steve gives you a 'I told you so' look. You roll your eyes.

"Thank you, Sam. For all of your help." You deeply thanked him and smiled up to him.

"Anytime, any day. You let me know." Sam nods as he placed his hands on the rail.

"My love." Nat sped walked over to you and fluffed your pillow. "My baby is growing up. Her first time in the hospital." Nat cooed to your cheek. "You are so brave."

"Let me know when I can borrow her for one of my missions." Sam joked to Steve.

"I heard that!" You laughed, punching Sam on the arm.

That laugh caused you a little pain, but it was worth it.
