A shaky hand slowly punched on the digits engraved in his memory. He took a deep breath before slowly placing the old telephone to his ear and waited for the connection to go through. A million thoughts were swimming around in his mind. His heart pounded loudly in his ears and somehow his mouth was suddenly dry.
He wasn't sure why he made the phone call in the first place but he knew for sure that he needed to do it. He'd had to bribe the guard to allow him to make the call when he came to get him out of solitary for his one hour of gym.
He also wasn't sure the person would pick up. He hadn't spoken to the man in five solid years. Maybe said man had already forgotten about him. Why would he pick up his call anyway? But even as the thought crossed his mind, he prayed and hoped the other male would answer.
It was quiet in the dimly lit hallway. There weren't other people around except for him and the guard. Every second seemed to drag out as he waited for the call to connect. A thin sweat was crawling over his skin and his intestines we're twisting painfully in his stomach.
"Your call has been successfully connected." The automated voice interrupted his thoughts. His breath caught in his lungs. He stood still, frozen, listening to the heavy breathing on the other side. He answered! He actually answered!
"Hello?" He cautiously let out cringing at how his voice was rough. The other person didn't speak. He frowned heart sinking when he realized it could be a whole different person on the other side and not who he thought it was. "Ke-Kentrell?"
"Sheyaa." The voice filtered through and sheyaa felt every hair on his body stand, a sought of static going through his entire system. He closed his eyes as they burned with tears throat tightening at the same time. Sheyaa doesn't remember the last he cried or even felt emotional. All he'd been feeling lately is anger and fear. He leaned his weight against the wall his heart thumbing even louder than before. His grip on the phone instantly tightened too.
"Is that you? How you been?" Sheyaa cleared his throat.
"Nah, it's tha ghost of Christmas past. Say, why the fuck you calling my phone for? Five in the morning at that?" Kentrell grumbled on the other side but he didn't sound sleepy. If anything he sounded alert and very much awake.
"My bad. I just-" sheyaa paused. He was feeling way too many emotions at the moment and his voice kept cracking. "I just wanted to hear your voice." He confessed. It was silent on the other side. He could still make out the heavy breathing though making him wonder what the male was doing on the other side.
"Five motherfucking years! Why now?" And sheyaa could plainly make out the anger in the voice. He had no excuse. He'd chosen to cut all contacts with the male after he got locked up. Truth be told he wouldn't have ever called. He wasn't planning on it either but he'd been in solitary a total of twenty five days now. He had fifteen more to go and it's honestly the longest he'd been in solitary confinement.
Long story short, being alone with his thoughts for that long was fucking with his mental. That and the fact that he'd been incarcerated five years. He would have been out sooner if he had maintained "good behavior" but with people trying him left and right and him being the nigga he was, he got into a lot of trouble. His warden was sick of putting him in solitary and the middle aged man swore up and down that if there was a harsher punishment he would've already been given it to him.
