"Mayday! Mayday!" Azara shouted into her radio as she spun her plane into a barrel roll to dodge a missile. "This is Alpha296! I have one wing on fire! Requesting backup!" Panic overlaid her voice.

She rolled again as a missile sailed past.

"Woah! That was way too close for comfort."

From the corner of her eye, she saw two members of her squadron take missiles to their cockpits.

Half her squadron had already fallen to the attack that had sprung from nowhere.

She soared over two of the enemy pilots and fired two warheads. The projectiles connected, and the planes exploded.

"Help!" one of her friends, James, yelled.

"Coming!" Azara responded immediately.

Azara rocketed toward him... too late as a shell blew his plane to shreds.

She stared...

"No..."

"No..."

"No!"

She swung her plane around and rushed toward an enemy aircraft that was winging toward her. Neither she nor the other pilot diverted their course.

At the last second, she fired missiles and dived under the plane as it exploded, sending shrapnel everywhere.

She turned just to see the last two members of her squadron explode. Azara watched... helpless... as fire and shrapnel rained down.

The last three enemy pilots wheeled on her.

Azara launched three missiles toward them.

Only one hit, and the plane exploded, sending metal flying into the other two planes. Azara raced away, the enemy planes in pursuit.

Two missiles flew toward Azara.

She dodged one missile, but the other one connected with her undamaged wing.

Azara cussed.

Suddenly she flew backward behind the two planes and shot two missiles. One connected, but the other plane managed to dodge.

The last enemy plane twisted around to face her.

Both planes rocketed toward each other, and at the same time each let one missile loose.

The missile that Azara shot detonated against the enemy plane.

However, the missile that was shot at her also connected. Her left wing blew off, and she was sent into a downward spiral.

"Mayday!" Azara yelled.

She moved to press a parachute button but stopped when a sharp pain exploded in her left side.

Her vision swam.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a small island in the distance.

She managed to aim shakily towards the island. Her plane tipped to the side, and she struggled to right it. Eventually, she saw trees underneath her plane.

Everything was fractured images.

In... and out... in... and out....

The last things that she remembered were her plane crashing...

The blistering heat from the wreckage...

Blood soaking her shirt as she collapsed on the stone...

And a strange animal-like figure coming straight at her...

Then darkness...
