Azara sliced a newborn in half, before twisting and raking her claws through another's torso. She could see the major fighting a group of newborns. He weaved skillfully in and out of the newborns' ranks.

Azara noticed that he had been getting less ferocious towards his enemies. Every time he tore a newborn in half, he grimaced. To Azara, it seemed that when he killed, he felt their pain.

"Azara, we are almost finished with two of the last groups," Drake said.

"Good," Azara said calmly, "just stick to the plan, and everything will work out fine."

"Did you hear that, Dusty?" Drake said with a grin as he snapped a vampire in half.

"Ha ha," Dusty snorted, twisting, and grabbing a newborn between his jaws.

Time Skip

Rex and Drake slid into the side of a gulley as Azara and Dusty ran on either side above them. Stones fell into the crevasse where Drake and Rex were running.

"Do not let him out of your sight!" Dusty yelled.

"Yeah... Because we are not chasing him with all we have," Drake said sarcastically.

"Newborns to the—," Dusty was cut off as a newborn tackled him into the crevasse.

Ten other newborns dropped into the chasm as well.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the major sprinting away.

"Can you handle them?" Azara asked, looking down at her pack as they tore through the vampires.

"Yes!"

"Good... then this one's mine," Azara said as she looked at the major's silhouette off in the distance.

Time Skip

Azara stalked into the clearing, feeling the damp earth beneath her paws. Standing in front of her was the major.

His dirty-blond hair was disheveled, and his skin was a shimmering white, like rest of his kind. His blood red eyes were scanning her from snout to tail as if calculating her next moves.

Her lips pulled back over her teeth as she snarled...

Without warning, she lunged at him. He rolled underneath her and kicked, sending her flying. Her claws dug into the ground as she twisted midair and landed, letting out a fierce growl.

They circled each other for several moments. He tapped his legs playfully. "Here, girl!"

That did it.

Azara streaked towards him. Locking her jaws around his arm, she twisted and threw him into a tree.

He frowned and studied her intently as he sprang to his feet.

She prowled towards him, eyes glittering malevolently.

He suddenly leapt towards her, teeth flashing. She rolled and knocked into him, sending them both sprawling.

Before he could stand back up, she planted both front feet on his arms and locked her jaws around his neck. She hesitated for a moment thinking about how her chase was over... when she felt a strange sense of calm fall over her.

She felt the major tense, getting ready to kill her, surely, but she also felt herself changing back into a human, but this time she could not stop it.

In a few moments, she found herself poised over the major. Her glowing amber eyes locked with his... and she saw confusion and something else... She gently released his neck.

Her adrenalin seemed to have abandoned her as she felt the exhaustion of the past few days wash over her. Slowly her body lost its fight, and she folded into him, falling asleep on the cold desert floor as the stars twinkled above them.
