"Hey, Y/N" the voice of your husband says on the other side of the call.
"Shoto! What's wrong?" you ask, putting your phone on your shoulder and leaning your head on it.
"Nothing, I just wanted to call you before the mission starts," he hesitates and speaks up again.
"Are you busy?" he asks
"Actually yeah," you struggle, "I'm making dinner for us so come back home quick!"
"Dinner? Did you burn down the house?" he says, genuinely worried.
"No Shoto, I've grown since high school," you roll your eyes, thinking back to when you burned the kitchen at your high school.
"Good. Well I don't want you getting distracted and burning our place so I'll go now. I'll be home as quick as I can but don't expect me to come before 11. I promise to be able to eat with you though.
"Ok darling, be careful. Love you."
"I Love you too, bye."
"Bye," you say and hear the phone buzz, signaling that the call ended.
You wash your hands in the kitchen sink and sigh. You just finished cooking dinner for you and your husband, Todoroki. You barely cooked anything, since you would literally burn water. He'd always cook instead of you, but you wanted to do something special for him. You didn't really have a reason to, but he had a huge mission so he was gone all day, giving you the whole day to cook. You dry your hands with a towel and start setting the table.
You glance over at the TV while putting down th. You had it playing in the background, since you didn't like how quiet the house was, but you didn't pay attention to what was on. You shrug and grab the food. You cooked salmon and rice with chicken, and garlic bread for the side. You grab a bag of mint leaves from the cabinet and put them on top of the food. You take a small bite to taste test and your eyes widen. It was actually pretty good.
"Better then the food at UA," you snicker to yourself.
You sigh thinking back to your highschool memories. You were in the general studies, and Todoroki was in the hero course. You both never talked since you were in different courses, but during a class reunion you both bumped into each other and hit it off from there. You were cheerful and mischievous while he was calm and straightforward. You were both complete opposites yet you fell for each other, and now here you are married and making dinner for him.
You finish setting the table and look at it proudly. You looked like a mess but you didn't care. You were pleased with your cooking, and hoped Todoroki was too. You decide to take a quick shower and freshen up.
You yawn and look at the clock. It was about 10:30 PM and you finished taking your shower and changed your clothes. You weren't that mad that Todoroki was taking forever. The food was getting cold though, but you shrug it off. You look at the table wondering if you forgot anything.
"The wine!" you remember and rush to the kitchen to grab the wine. You pass by the TV which was still on and catch a quick glance of what was on.
"Ew news," you think to yourself while taking out the wine glasses. You never liked the news, it was boring and only brought depressing news. Todoroki on the other hand, loved the news. But you guess that makes sense, he was a pro-hero after all. You hum to yourself, excited. It's been a while since you guys had time to yourself. He's been getting ready for this big mission of his. Of course, you didn't like him being away all the time, but you understood it. Besides once he finishes up with this mission, he promised to spend more time with you. You tune in and listen to the news despite your opinion on it. Is this what becoming an adult is like?
"Just in! The victims' casualties in the Shizuoka Prefecture have been confirmed," the reporter says, with a serious look on her face.
Shizuoka Prefecture huh? Sounds awfully familiar. Anyway, you're now immersed in the news. You pour some wine for yourself, and lean on the couch, taking a sip. The reporter lists of names you've never heard of, but the last one she says made your heart stop.
"And lastly, Pro-Hero Shoto, also known as Shoto Todoroki."
You open the door to your house. You just came back from Todoroki's funeral. The house seemed dark and dull even though a few weeks ago, it was your safe spot.
According to the other heroes that survived the mission, Shoto took the risk of handling the Villian on his own, while the others helped get the pedestrians to a safer place. By the time they were back, Shoto was on the floor, unconscious and injured. They said that he kept muttering something about dinner, which made you freeze.
You didn't cry until the coffin got lowered into the ground. Maybe, that's when it hit you. He was dead. This wasn't one of his unfunny jokes, no matter how much you hoped it was. He was gone and wasn't coming back. Shoto's siblings and your friends comforted you, but it didn't help change the fact that Todoroki was no longer with you.
You take a glance at yourself in the mirror. The once cheerful, energetic woman you were was now replaced with a dark, and broken widow. Your tear stained cheeks and puffy eyes seemed to be calling out to people that you've gone through alot through the past few days. You sigh and go to the kitchen to get a snack. Everywhere you looked seemed to hold memories. Memories that comforted you at your darkest of times. Now they were just painful. You open the fridge and the only thing you had was the food that you cooked for him on that horrible day. You stare at it for a while but take it out and microwave it.
You sit at the table and start eating. After all these days, the flavor was still there as if you cooked it yesterday. You look up and suck in your breath in shock. Sitting across the table was Todoroki, happily watching you eat.
"Sho..to?" you mutter but when you blink, he was gone.
You're heart shattered. It was just an illusion. You continue to eat but your vision starts to cloud with tears welling up in your eyes. They start to fall into your food and you break down. You lean your head on the table and let everything out. Even though you saw his body, and saw it get lowered into the grave, you still couldn't believe he was gone. You cry for a good thirty minute. Slowly, you sit back up and start to eat your food again. You realize something and chuckle.
"Shoto, you broke your promise."
