Rain softly pattered against the window. Varian had laid his head against the cool glass, memories of times since passed running before his mind. His once bright blue eyes were now dulled with tears that had yet to be shed. The rain was a reminder. A reminder that he failed. A reminder that he hadn't been good enough. A reminder that he wasn't good enough.
He had failed all that had loved him, and all that had loved him had turned their backs on him.
Was he to blame for all of this? Was he to blame for his mothers' death when he was a child? Was he to blame for the troubles of his people when he had only ever thought of helping those around him? Was he to blame for the princess' panic when he begged on his hands and knees for her help? Was he to blame for his fathers' death after he had messed up?
Was he to blame for the rise and fall of his people?
He had done it all, and there was no coming back from the darkness that had swallowed his heart. The moon blinked through blackened clouds, shedding a soft light against Varian's raven hair.
Who was he to the moon?
Was he a mere human? A simple mortal who could never understand her mysteries? Was he a scientist that could lead whoever may follow to a greatness no other had ever seen before? Was he a child who had his hopes dashed too quickly in life?
Was he a curse or a blessing to the stars above him, ever twinkling in the darkness?
A silent sob tore itself from the teen's chest, and he tried his best to stay quiet. His small body shook as tears began to fall down his freckled cheeks.
He had failed, and his failure had become his title.
A gloved hand rested on Varian's shoulder, and he looked up to meet bright green eyes.
"Hey, hair stripe. What's goin' on in that head of yours?"
Varian looked away, biting his lip to hold back a whimper. Hugo ran a hand through Varian's hair, sighing as the younger leaned into the touch. "Not up for talking?" He shook his head, more tears falling. "That's okay, freckles. You want me to stay?"
Reaching out, Varian dragged Hugo to sit next to him. The two melted into the others' touch before a small sound made its way from Varian. Hugo kissed the top of Varian's head and rubbed his shoulder softly. "You can cry, Var. It's okay, I'm here now."
Blue eyes closed tightly as Varian buried his face into Hugo's chest, his body shaking with the intensity of his cries. Hugo felt his own tears fall silently as he held the one he loved close. He could do nothing but watch as Varian tired himself out, and he buried his nose in black hair.
"I know it hurts, Varian, but I can help. You don't have to tell me today, or even tomorrow, but I wanna help you get better!" He pulled away to look into Varian's eyes, smiling softly as he brushed the still-falling tears from flushed cheeks. "I love you too much to see you in pain."
Varian hiccupped softly as he held Hugo's hand to his cheek, turning his head slightly to plant a small kiss on the palm. "You're too good to me, my emerald. What did I do to deserve you?"
Hugo laughed softly as he leaned back against the padded window. The blond pulled Varian to his chest with a smile. The older placed a small kiss on Varian's lips, pulling away with a small smile. "You existed, and I can't be more thankful for that, my dearly beloved."
