riki was getting ready for his first day of high school when his mother knocked on the door.
"come in" riki mumbled as he shoved his belongings into a gray backpack. hearing those words, his mother came in and watched him piling stuff into his backpack.
"riki sweetie, you're going to school not a camping resort." she laughed and pulled out all the unnecessary items from his bag.
"..really? a tooth brush?"
"one can never be too prepared" riki smiled sheepishly and took the tooth brush back, shoving it back into his bag.
"don't you think that's going to be a bit heavy?" his mother asked, watching her son struggle to put his backpack on.
riki slung the backpack over his shoulder and fell backwards into his bed. as one could expect.
"maybe it is a bit heavy" he laughed, embarrassed, and took out some things from his bag.
"you bring a tooth brush but not a note book? what am i going to do with you riki?" riki's mother looked around the empty room that was full of cardboard boxes from the moving.
"now where did that notebook go..." shoving some boxes out of the way, his mom opened box after box, not finding any notebook.
she sighed. "you know what, go ask your dad for some money. go buy a notebook on your way out, i only have japanese currency on me as of now."
the boy slumped his back and slithered his way out the room. "okay" he opened the door and was greeted by his father, already holding some money up for him.
"were you eavesdropping?" the mother playfully yelled as she wrapped herself in her cardigan.
riki's father chuckled and rubbed his nape. "no, but yes. i was going to give him money for the notebook and so he could buy some korean street food after school."
"wait but i don't know how korean currency works" riki chimed in.
"it's pretty simple since you just moved from japan, so a single yen is called a won." and his father continued on explaining how korean currency worked, all this new information frying riki's brain.
"got it?" riki's father asked and handed him the money.
riki slowly nodded, still trying to process the new change. "1 yen is almost about 10 won.." riki repeated to himself and grabbed his backpack.
"okay, thanks dad. bye mom and dad!" he yelled and started out the door. both his mom and dad waved him off as his figure became smaller and smaller from the distance.
the mom turned to face the dad. "do you think he's going to be okay?"
"why wouldn't he be, he already understands basic korean." the mother sighed and shook her head. "basic korean isn't enough to ask people things."
"it is in my book" the father proudly said.
"you're going to be the death of me, mr. nishimura." riki's mother chuckled.

the outside was loud, as kids were walking to school with their friends and people trying to sell stuff outside of stores.
riki decided to walk to his school so he could take time to browse around gyeonggi.
the streets weren't very full of cars either, a lot of kids either walked or rode their bikes around.
