Chapter 1
Delilah Ronald walked to the elevator and headed for the top floor. At the age of 27, she had worked at McAllister's Law Firm for two years as a representative of the firm, she was one of the best.
She stepped out of the elevator and headed for Joss McAllister's office. From her point of view and that of many females and even males she was sure, the Greek was tall, dark, handsome and very rich. Just the type of man I shouldn't be having erotic thoughts about, she thought, reprimanding herself for the hundredth time to no avail.
She knocked on the door and waited for the permission to enter, when it was granted, she walked into the office. "Good morning Mr. McAllister, I got a message saying that you wanted to see me."
He turned from the window where he had been standing and walked to the door, closed it and led her to a seat before taking one himself. He sighed and looked and her, "I'm going to be blunt and just inform you of the situation but before I do, I want you to know that the decision is completely yours and I won't pressure you if you decline then that's it, no means no. Ok?"
Delilah's heart started to pound, wondering if this would be the end of her career at this firm. Fear began to run through her like quick fire, causing her to start worrying. She nodded a yes for fear that her voice would fail her.
"Good. My brother Shawn, who you met at the Christmas party I believe, has given me an ultimatum, marry you for two years or watch as he burns my company, this company to the ground. The other catch is that if we don't do as he demanded then he will also ruin your reputation, professionally and personally. I know that this is a lot to swallow but I don't need an answer right away. Take a few days off and make up your mid bout what to do, as I said before, it is your decision completely."
Delilah sat in the chair transfixed by shock. This was definitely not what she had been expecting to hear at all, this goes way beyond out of the box. She thought about what it would be like to share her life with another and found a part of her like the possibility but the other part of her was cautious, not wanted to be hurt again.
"Will it be a normal marriage or just a hollow one? Looking real from the outside but fake on the inside."
Joss sighed again and replied, "I could never force you to sleep with a man that you don't love. If you mean will we have sex, that's up to you really. But it's not something that will be forced on you at any time."
"Do you want to marry me?"
Joss looked up, surprised at the question. "Hmm. I'm going to be honest with you, I never really gave it much thought. Granted I do find you attractive. Very attractive. But marriage is a commitment that requires more than that."
Delilah nodded, "But why is he doing this?"
"He left me a message on my answering machine but you might not like some of the stuff that is said. Do you want to listen to it all the same?"
"Yes. It might answer some of the questions that I have."
He nodded and played the message, "Yo bro, guess what Shady Shawn has up his sleeves this time?!! I finally found the solution to your marital problem. You just have to marry Delilah Ronald for two years, granted I'm not insisting on any hanky panky but it has to at least look believable, I'm not that cruel..." Pause. "Well not to her any way, she's an honest to God lady.... But that reputation could go away as easily as her professional one if things don't go the 'right' way. So you have seven days to come to decide what you guys are going to do but something tells me that wedding bells are going to be ringing. Oh and your wedding needs to be in three months. Chao!!"
When the message ended, Delilah sat there for a moment gathering her thoughts before getting up and headed to the door. "I'm taking three days off. I'll contact you at that time with what my answer will be. Good day."
As she walked to her car she thought about how a man she had only met once at a party was turning her life upside down.
Walking to the elevator, she thought about whether or not she should have just told him no. But it wasn't just her life that she had to consider, it wasn't just her life that was going to be affected by the decision. And that's what Shawn is counting on, she thought. Somehow she knew that Shawn knew that Joss, being the gentleman that he was, would let her decide, and that she would never let others when she could help them, her pro- bono cases a testament to that fact; and thus he figured that the end result would be the result that he was aiming for.
