The next morning Delilah got up later than usual and decided to take that day off as well. It had been a while since she had allowed herself a little free time and with all the things going on in her life and those that were yet to happen, she decided that she deserved it.
She got dressed and left a note for Karen, telling her that she would be at the store shopping for a dress. Karen of course, would know which store she meant.
As Delilah drove to the store, her mind was all over the place, contemplating all the possibilities. She wasn't naïve enough to think that he would fall in love with her or that their arrangement would become permanent, she was worried that she would be the one to fall and end up with her heart broken. Part of her suspected that she already had some feelings for him, apart from the strong attraction she had felt when they first met at the party that was held to celebrate the first McAllister's building completion.
It was a cliché kind of meeting, their eyes met across the room and they had been drawn to each other, moving towards each other by a force unknown. They had met in the center of the room at the beginning of a new song, went into each other's arms and danced two dances together, not a word passing between the two. As if afraid that words might take away the magic that surrounded them.
At the end of the dance they walked to the table with the drinks and he got her a glass of champagne and they finally introduced themselves to each other, Delilah was surprised that the job she had just received confirmation for the following Monday, could stand in the way of the most intense feeling she had ever had.
"That name sounds very familiar, have we met before? No. I would remember if we had met. Who are you really Delilah?"
Delilah sighed as disappointment flowed through her," I'm one your newest employees. I'll be working for you come Monday morning."
She could see the disappointment on his face as the information she just gave him processed and the realization that they could not be together without jeopardizing the reputation of the brand new company sank in.
That was years ago and she still regretted that she never had something with him. But the fact that he did not try to have a one night stand even if he dumped her after, disregarding the awkward atmosphere it would have created in the office, kind of bruised her ego. He just danced with her again and went to speak with of the executives who wanted his attention and they had only professional conversations after that.
Delilah walked into the store wondering which dress to buy then she remembered that Liana had told her about the dress that had just been delivered from Paris that she was sure she would like.
She looked around for Liana and saw her talking to a man that she could not see as his back was turned to her while Liana stood facing her.
That man looks a lot like Joss, she thought as she walked over to where the two were standing. As she drew nearer she realized that it was him after all.
As she approached, the two immediately halted their conversation, the paranoid side of Delilah wondered if she had been the topic of discussion.
"Hi Liana, Joss. How are you both today?" Delilah said as she stopped in front of them.
"Hello Delilah. The last person I was expecting to see here in what my sister calls a reasonably priced store while in my opinion, it was created to bankrupt husbands and fathers who are fortunate enough to have their women find this place." Joss said jokingly."
"It is actually reasonably priced." Delilah said with a laugh. "You just have to have an unreasonable amount of money." The three laughed.
"Let's at least sit before you two insult my store further. We all can't be owners of law firms brother." Liana said while leading the way to the chairs that were set up for clients.
"So what brings you here Delilah? Don't tell me you've turned stalker now?" Joss asked, the curiosity evident in his voice.
"I'm here for a dress of course. Sorry to bruise your ego but it's kind of getting crowded in here with all four of us and it taking up so much room." Delilah replied cheekily.
Liana jumped up and exclaimed, "But of course. You came to see the dress. I completely forgot that I had it to show you, come on. You can come too brother."
They sat and talked for a bit while Liana went for the dress. It was beautiful... It was mid-thigh in length, light blue with long sleeves and black with silver decorations.
"Wow! That is a breathtaking dress." Joss said appreciatively.
"I'll let you borrow it sometime if you promise not to stretch it out like the last one." Delilah quipped as she gazed at the dress transfixed by its beauty.
"That looks like one very expensive dress, I don't even think I could afford to borrow it." Joss threw back jovially.
