Chapter3- Welcome to the family

Cadence rolled over in bed and blinked a couple of times to get her eyes adjusted to the dimly lit room. She could see the sun light trying to peek through the curtains. With a groan she rolled over in bed and got out, opening the curtains of her windows. Cadence covered her eyes to shield them but as she did so she saw movement in the shadows. She saw it had looked like a guy that ran into the woods. She quickly changed into some ripped jeans and a loose t-shirt. As she raced down the stairs she wrote a quick note to her mother:

“I’ll be back. Went exploring

in the woods .I’ll be

careful. Hope you have

a good morning.

-Love, Cadence”

She ran out the back door not noticing the newspaper that stated that Lucy Owen was found dead. She has brutally killed by what seemed to be an animal attack. All the same police were investigating it making sure it wasn’t foul play. Cadence was thankful it was still pretty warm out and that she wouldn’t freeze. Cadence hesitated when she got to the edge where the woods began but she took a deep breathe and stepped in. She took cautious steps and went where she thought the figure might have gone. As she walked she felt the same sensation of being watched like she did before.

Without realizing it she quickened her pace and her breathing became faster. Suddenly a twig snapped beside her as though someone stepped on it and she faced were it came from and stood completely still. She looked around and suddenly another twig snapped from her other side and she yelled,

“Hello?! Who’s there?!”

She felt her heartbeat quicken as another twig snapped and some birds flew from some bushes close to her. Cadence turned toward the way she thought she had come and began to walk. The sensation of being watched came back stronger than ever and she heard what sounded like footsteps from behind her.

Cadence began to run as terror seized her.

She went through all the things in her mind that she could do it someone attacked her. She was beginning to regret coming to the woods alone and vowed that if she got out of this she would never come alone ever again. Finally she had to stop to get her breathe back, when she heard a branch snap and something growl. All of a sudden as all that happened simultaneously a hand grabbed her shoulder and she yelped. She whirled around to face the person and there in front of her stood Nathaniel. She looked at him for a moment then her legs gave out on her. Before she could hit the ground he caught her in his arms and held her.

“Jesus, you’re trembling! What happened?!”

She could feel herself shaking and she had to concentrate on his soft voice so it would ease. Finally, when she had stopped shaking she replied,

“I had gotten lost. I…I couldn’t find my way. I-I got scared.”

At the end of her words she looked up at him and saw his eyes were warm and caring. He sighed heavily but smiled a little hesitantly before saying,

“Come one. Lets get you home.”

Just when he said that there was a snarl that came from behind them. They looked and saw an adolescent wolf –looked as though it just came into adolescents- looking at them snarling. It seemed to have injured its leg but it wasn’t bleeding just hanging loosely. When it looked into Cadence’s eyes, it enchanted her and she unconsciously took a step forward. Nathaniel grabbed her arm and alarmed asked her,

“What are you doing?!” She looked at him and said as though it was the most sane and obvious thing,

“It’s hurt. I’m going to help it.”
