~~~Jake's P.O.V.~~~
She was gazing around in wonder and awe. She looked so childlike it made it hurt even more that she has been treated like this. I sit down next to her. "How long?" I ask her.She sighs "eleven years" she answers quietly. Eleven years!?
"Is it both of them?" She nods. "Why haven't you left?"
"I can't. They are my parents and I don't want to go into foster care and be with someone possibly worse. They aren't even here all the time and I'm moving out when I turn eighteen in four months. It's fine." I cannot believe she just said that to me!
"It is not fucking fine!" I yell at her "they are hitting you, hurting you and you are letting them! You cannot fucking say that's fine! It is anything but fine!" She flinches at my words and my explosion. I sigh "I'm sorry but I just can't stand the thought of anyone hurting you. It makes me feel sick!"
She just stays quiet looking down at her hands in her lap. She looks so fragile. I can't stand her being alone like that. I grab her hand and pull her into my lap. I lay my head on her shoulder and just let myself breath her in, knowing that right now she is safe. For now.
I can't deny it now. I like her. A lot. I've known her for a total of three days and I like her this much. It seems unhealthy, irrational, stupid, but it's the truth. I want to tell her but I can't. I'm not good for her, she has so much crap in her life, I can't add to that.
I don't even know how long I will be able to stay here. I really don't want to leave her though. But I came here knowing it wasn't for long they are still after my family. I should tell her the truth. I will.
"Avery?" I ask. She looks up at me and I take a deep breath "I need to tell you something" she slides out of my lap and waits for me to continue. "I won't be staying here long. I came here knowing that this wasn't going to be a permanent situation. But after meeting you I really don't want to leave. I don't know when I will leave, but I do know that I need to help you get away from your family before I go" I watch her reactions. I had intended to tell her the rest but I just couldn't, she needs to be safe and this is the best I can do.
There is a flash of pain on her face and then it's gone and her face is just blank. She looks at me "okay how do you suggest we get me out of there?"
