The class began to murmur with excitement at what the Professor had told them. Michael was concentrating hard on ignoring their idiotic thoughts because none of them had a clue what was going on. All of them knew about the Hellsing Organization, the group of vampire hunters who tracked reckless vampires and killed them before the public could realize a problem. However, this case was special because the Hellsing hunters should have eliminated the threat already, meaning the loose vampire was either too powerful or too elusive.
The professor told them this because he wanted to know if any of them had information about the killings, the reason being if the public became suspicious it would disrupt the peace and order pureblood vampires sought for. Purebloods had a contract with the Hellsing Organization that the hunters would be allowed to kill vampires if purebloods failed to keep the ones they made under control, and that system had been working for almost a century. The second reason was because the Professor wanted this to be a lesson on what happens as a result of sloppy hunting.
Most purebloods, as Michael could tell from their arrogant thoughts, were certain no simple vampire hunter could kill them. They were likely right, but a group of vampire hunters might have an advantage. A normal vampire could be easily killed by a wooden stake or decapitation. A pureblood would have to have their heart extracted and obliterated, or their body completely drained of blood. Whereas vampires have an almost fatal weakness to sunlight and silver, those are only weakening to a fully matured pureblood, although silver could be dangerous. Essentially, it would be virtually impossible for a pureblood to be killed by anything but another pureblood.
“It is possible this is a rogue pureblood,” Bastian offered to the class as a whole. Of the few people Michael could stand, Bastian was one of them. He was intelligent and aristocratic without being arrogant or ridiculous. They’d played chess together often as boys and Michael developed feeling for him but they were never returned.
“That could certainly be the case,” said the Professor, “but if so, the vampire hunters will come after us directly, so we should hope not. Let this be a lesson to all of you to strictly control any vampires you make.”
Michael for a moment wondered if it could be his own vampire, Cedric, doing this. He decided that would have been impossible for he would have felt his progeny’s maddened hunger. Michael had taught Cedric how to discreetly drink from an intoxicated lady and heal the bite marks so that when she awoke the next day she would never know.
After class Michael was planning on heading back to his room and reading but Adali demanded he wait and listen to her. She was addressing him and all of her friends, apparently including Henri. Michael looked at Henri with confusion as to what he was doing with these people while Adali talked.
“I think we should find and stop the rogue vampire,” Adali suggested.
“What for? It’s not like we’ll be rewarded,” Xenia commented dully.
“Still, we could really set ourselves apart by taking this initiative,” she said and there was a brief pause.
“I agree!” exclaimed Henri suddenly. Adali looked at him with a genuinely sweet smile. Her pale blonde hair fell over her eyes and she pushed it back before looking up at Michael.
“What do you think?” she asked and everyone looked at him. He internally thought this was a ridiculous and childish idea but luckily only he could read the thoughts of others. If Henri was going he decided he should go along to protect him from any miscellaneous Dracula’s with political ambition, as there very well might have been hanging around this rogue vampire.
